The San Saba Golf Association Club Champions are Michael Whitley and Flossie Woodward and Jerry Minter! The annual San Saba Club Championship Tournament was held August 30-31, 2008.
Michael Whitley had an outstanding win with scores of 73 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday. This was Michael’s second time to win the Men’s Club Championship. Second Place went to Richard Duncan and Third Place to Rick Baskin.
Flossie Woodward captured the Ladies Club Championship for the fifth time! Flossie shot an incredible score of 78 on Saturday to actually beat all of the men but three in the entire tournament. Second Place went to Sandra Baskin a previous club champion.
Jerry Minter with amazing scores of 70 on Saturday and 73 on Sunday captured the Senior Men’s Championship! Roy Woodward was Second.
In the President’s Flight John Reavis won First Place, Johnny Clawson Second Place, and Wally Killman Third Place.
In the Men’s First Flight Mike Conners took First Place and Don Riggs Second Place.
In the Senior Men’s President’s Flight Ray Hawkins won First Place and David Mitchell won Second Place.
Other participating members were: Anita Miles, Shirley Hardin, Wayne Riddle, Louis Cisneroz, Mike Allen, Rick McBee, Val Vallenavedo, Tony Cantu, Ralph Wilson, and Bill Prescot.
There were only 20 men and 4 women participating in the Club Championship. Members should feel an obligation to their club!
The members who did play had a great time of fun and fellowship, as it should be. A delicious barbecue lunch was served on Sunday at noon, making it possible for all players to attend the church of their choice, and the cost for the event is minimal. Some members objected to having the tournament when there is such extreme heat so perhaps the tournament will be scheduled later next year in the hopes that more members will participate.
August 28, 2008 the San Saba Ladies Golf Association met for play day with a continuation of the Little-Low Cup with a slight variation of the Solheim game. The play was team play using handicaps with the two low scoring teams receiving a point. The two teams were Hattie Rogers and Jo Anne Hardy: and Jo Ann Snow and Dorothy Sterner.
Anita Miles was Low Gross for the day and Jo Anne Hardy Low Net. Anita Miles and Sandee Hartley both chipped in to split the chip in pot and Sandee also scored the only birdie of the day. Bobbie Churchill and Pat Ribb also participated.
September 4, 2008 The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met for the monthly business meeting with the President, Anita Miles, calling the meeting to order.
The meeting was opened with prayer by the Club Chaplain, Nell McHorse. The Secretary, Hattie Rogers, read the minutes and they were approved as read. The Treasurer, Bobbie Churchill, gave the financial report. Bobbie Churchill also gave a financial report for the Summer Pecan Classic Four Lady Tournament.
The ladies voted unanimously to waive the constitution rules of officers and the officers of 2008 will serve a two year term and the club will also keep the same committee appointments due to the small number of active members.
Sandee Hartley gave a report on the upcoming Traveling Four Ball Tournament which will be hosted by San Saba on September 18, 2008. The ladies adjourned for the final play for the Little-Low Cup.
Four ladies were tied with three points each: Jo Anne Hardy, Hattie Rogers, Dorothy Sterner, and Jo Ann Snow and the final game was individual match point.
Jo Anne Hardy defeated Hattie Rogers and Dorothy Sterner defeated Jo Ann Snow. Then the Chair, Sandee Hartley, called for a sudden death play off between Jo Anne Hardy and Dorothy Sterner.
It was an exciting climax to the month long event with a full gallery. The ladies tied on the first hole and continued to the second hole, a par three. Jo Anne Hardy made a respectable boggie and Dorothy stepped up to par the hole for the win! Dorothy Sterner is the 2008 winner of the Little-Low Cup!
Anita Miles defeated Sandee Hartley and they tied for Low Gross for the day and Bobbie Churchill defeated Becky Hardin. Sandee scored the only birdie of the day.
Then the ladies had a very special treat as they were invited to the home of Jo Anne Hardy for lunch and celebration. She served the ladies a beautiful congealed tuna salad and the old time San Saba favorite Sara Farley’s Reception Salad with an assortment of crackers and iced tea and a fabulous rum cake for dessert.
It was a wonderful lunch and a very kind gesture on the part of Jo Anne and the ladies had a great time! Pat Ribb also joined us for lunch. Thanks go out to Jo Anne and if she wants to do it next week I think it is a unanimous YES!
We had one more exciting event at the course. Don Riggs scored his first hole in one! Congratulations to Don! I know I can do this any day now.
One last footnote: as I looked over the roster of players in the Club Championship I discovered I should have won an award. I was the oldest participant!
So what, I chose to keep on “swinging”!
