Wow, what a short, hot summer! Much has happened since May 30, 2008, the end of the last school year. SSISD staff have worked hard all summer to prepare for a successful start of the 2008-2009 school year.

Monday, August 25 was the first day of classes. The most evident change in this school year is the school start time. The first bell sounds at 7:50 am and school begins promptly at 7:55 am. The final bell to end the instructional day sounds at 3:37 pm. Throughout the day as well, the passing periods have been shortened by one minute. Why the change in the operation of the school day? Primarily, the school start time, end time and the adjustment of the passing periods was a result of the need for more instructional time with students. Students need the rigor of the core classes, but they also must have time to take technology, participate in physical education, music and have lunch and play on the playground. Extending the school day and shortening the passing periods allowed administrative staff to construct a schedule that would provide students with the academic rigor they need but also, allow them to participate in the electives and other classes of which they want to participate. Most students in high school are required to take 4 courses in math, science, social studies and English, along with a variety of other required courses. Without extending the school day and offering 8 periods a day, students would be limited in their choices. Also, face time with teachers is imperative to student learning, and the extended time throughout the district will improve academics.

Another change that citizens may notice is the designated student parking at Armadillo Arena. Safe passage, no congestion, and limited parking on Commerce Street and on 9th street should be the result of the new parking arrangement.
