The Lady Dillos traveled to Jacketland last Tuesday before the Thanksgiving break and were handed a 48-39 loss by the state ranked Llano LadyJackets. This was a much anticipated matchup due to the fact that we upset them last year and that didn’t set well with our neighbors to the south. Some comments were made this summer about how the Lady Jackets were not getting any better playing the likes of San Saba, Early, and Goldthwaite in summer ball, so there was a definite intensity to the game.
I’m not taking anything away from Llano because they are well coached and have a nice team and should make it back to Austin. All I have to say to Mr. Coffee is that be thankful for being in Region 4 and I welcome them to battle in District 6-2A and Region 1 like our Lady Dillos do. They beat us fair and square but we will be their toughest game outside of Early before the state tournament. We jumped on them early and led 12-8 to end the 1st quarter; they responded and took a 24-18 lead into halftime.
It seems in every game that we have about a two minute lapse that comes back to haunt us. We play well for thirty minutes, but the fact is that all games are thirty two minutes. We must correct this before District arrives.
We outscored them 13-12 to end the third and were down four with about four minutes to play but couldn’t prevail. Our quickness and man pressure really gave them fits, however their size wore us down as the game went on. They are huge and their posts do a great job of pinning and getting position for the ball. Coach Walters and his staff should be commended on the coaching of their posts. Sierra Thompson who has committed to Midwestern is a really nice player and the Jensen and Coffey kids really gave us fits.
I was very proud of how we competed and gave them a game. Games like this will pay off for us in the future because our District contests will be very similar to this game. Life on the road is tough at times with a hostile environment and questionable calls, but we can’t make excuses. Great teams overcome this and get the job done. Llano made shots when they had to and we didn’t. Best of Luck to Coach Walters and his girls and the Lady Dillos wish them a return trip to Austin.
Like I said earlier, our guards (Calea Turner, Shelby Hardy, Nicole Sears, Jo Bush, Hannah Crosby, and Tarah Crosby) ran our man jump really well. This is the best TEAM that I’ve had at matching up and jumping off makes and misses. We’re still a bit slow on rotations but will get better with time. Shelby Hardy led all scorers with 21 points. Stats from this game will be in the next edition.
Our JV played well also but were downed by a score of 35-28. What most people don’t realize is that our JV, which is made up of almost ALL freshman, has been battling true JV’s which are made up mainly of sophomores and juniors. These girls have been in every game and will become better players due to them “playing up” against older competition. We were only down three at half, 20-17, and kept the game close throughout the entire second half.
We had a few turnovers down the stretch that wound up costing us. Danessa Vasquez had another big game and Syliva Jimenez, Bianca Zepeda, Johna Reavis, and Taylor Smith made big plays throughout the night in our 31 zone. Our JV guards need to handle the ball better; we’re “picking up our dribble” way too much at times and this has been leading to costly turnovers. Danessa led all scorers with 14 and Reavis chipped in 11. We were very proud of our effort but we need to cutdown turnovers in order to beat good teams.
When the paper comes out we will have played Liberty Hill which has a strong basketball tradition. I will have expected a tough road game for us as we will have traveled there for Tuesday night’s contest. Tomorrow, we will play at the end of the boy’s tournament. Our JV will play Smithville at 5:30 and our Varsity girls will play at 7:00.
Smithville has a strong basketball program and went to the State Tournament about five years ago. Robin Ramsay is their coach and she has been there awhile; she does a great job. Their girls will play hard and I expect a dogfight from the tipoff.
The following Tuesday we will travel to Lago Vista for a double header with our boys; our JV will also be playing there. We hope the holidays treated you all well and that you didn’t eat too much. If any of you guys need to drop a few pounds, come on by Armadillo Arena and we’ll let you run with us to shed a few pounds. I’m pretty sure the girls won’t mind. In all seriousness, we are thankful for God’s blessings and we look forward to seeing you all at a game soon.
