Vaughn competes in Coach-Pitch State Tournament
Thursday, August 14, 2008 • Posted August 14, 2008

The Coach-Pitch State Tournament was held in Holland, Texas, during July 21st-26th. The tournament started with the best 20 teams in Texas.

Jack and Sandra Vaughn attended several of these games because their granddaughter, Alyssa Vaughn, is a member on one of the teams. She is the daughter of Brad Vaughn.

Alyssa plays on a team named West Smokin' Slammers, sponsored by K.W. Smokehouse in West, Texas. West is located just north of Waco. Brad and Alyssa both reside in Waco, but Alyssa plays in the West league. West's league is a very strong one as evidenced by two teams from West making it to the state tournament.

After playing games each night and watching elimination of team after team, the Slammers were one of only two teams left come Saturday morning. On Friday night, the Slammers eliminated Academy All-Stars by a score of 18-9, as well as Rogers' Blaze by a score of 10-9, in back to back games to advance to the Championship game. Ironically, the other team in that game was from West and the Slammers had beaten that team in regular season play.

When all of the dust settled on Saturday, and after watching the leading score go back and forth between the two teams, the Slammers came up just one run short of winning the State Tournament. The final score of the hard fought game was 5-4 with W.E. Electric from West emerging as the new State Champions.

The Smokin' Slammers placed second in this State Tournament, but it was an exciting way to end a very strong season. Congratulations, Alyssa, and all of the members of the Smokin' Slammers team!
