Richard Burton Smith Reunion
Thursday, August 14, 2008 • Posted August 14, 2008

The heirs of Richard Burton Smith and Sarah Edwards Smith met July 27, 2008, in the Mercury Community Center for their annual reunion.

Richard and Sarah Smith came to the Elm Grove Community in northwest San Saba County in the late 1800s, where the last of their children - Roy, "B," Hugh and Kirby - were born. Though no sons, daughters or spouses are now living, there are seven first-cousins still living. Three of the first-cousins were present at the reunion. A great-grandson, Jerald Weatherman, and his wife, Gloria, live on the old home place at Elm Grove.

The morning visiting was followed by a covered dish lunch with delicious barbecued beef and sausage prepared by Jerald. Old pictures put in scrapbooks by Shirley McCoy were enjoyed by all.

Those present were from Roanoke, Virginia; Houston, Robert Lee, Fredericksburg, San Antonio, Alvarado, Llano, Brownwood, Brady, Rochelle, Richland Springs, Bowser, Mercury and Elm Grove.

A surprise birthday party for Edith Gossett was given by her children later that afternoon in recognition of her 90th birthday. Many of Edith's friends from the surrounding communities came to help her celebrate this very special occasion.
