30 Years AgoNovember 25, 1982Residents of the Bend Community presented their version of the gold rush days in a play entitled "Deadwood Dick", as a project to raise money for the upkeep of the Bend Community Building. Participants in the play were: Bonnie Millican, Nana Marley, Chris McDaniel, Dickie Eckhoff, Sally Baxter, Bobbie Morris, R.J. Henninger, Pat Millican, Cindy Prater, Judy McCoy, Grady Gibson, Tommy Ketchum, Greg Smith, Jane Clark, Donna Baxter, Malissa Lemons, Clovix Ktetchum, Melissa Smith, Jackie Brister, Phil B. McCoury and Ken McCoy.This year the Christmas Tour of Homes sponsored by the Garden Club will include five lovely homes - the Marvin Riggs, the Noel Blocks, the Jim Childresses, the Charles Martins, and the Gary Derricks.Mrs. J. P. Cummings reported that due to a combine hitting an electric pole and breaking it last Tuesday, the Elm Grove community was without electricity all afternoon and it is amazing what you can't do without electricity. Everything was so quiet around the house. I couldn't sew, wash, watch TV, listen to the radio, the clocks all stopped. What would we do without electricity? We never know how to appreciate anything until we have to do without it.60 Years AgoNovember 27, 1952Adrouth-busting rain averaging near three inches fell over the entire county Sunday and Monday, the first precipitation of real consequence since the flood in mid-September.Republican Reuben Senterfitt of San Saba, candidate for re-election as Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, was given a clear field this week when his only opponent, Rep. Bill Daniel of Liberty, announced his withdrawal as a candidate for the speakership.Robert Lee Daniel will act as Master of Ceremonies in the Future Farmers of America Banquet scheduled for Thursday night in the school gymnasium.Mr. and Mrs. Joe M. Smith observed their Golden Wedding anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 16th with a celebration given by their children and grandchildren.Mrs. Inez Garrett was named as one of the five nominating members to select new officers for the state Parent-Teacher Association next year at a meeting held in Wichita Falls last week. Mrs. Garrett, State Chairman of Music and member of the Board of Managers, directed all of the music during the week's meetings.75 Years AgoNovember 23, 1939The first local hunter to bag a deer this season was W.T. Little, hardware merchant, who brought down a 115 pound, six-point buck at 60 yards from a precarious position in a live oak tree about 7:30 of the morning the season opened on Nov. 16th.According to Edgar House, someone stole his spare tire Tuesday evening before ten o'clock, from his Ford parked in the rear of his shop. From observation of fingerprints, the conclusion is that some young fellow took it off.The Red & White Store has a whole carload of grapefruit added to their big stock of holiday groceries. The store is brim full of good things. See their advertisement in this paper.Census report shows that 3,263 bales of cotton were ginned in San Saba County from the crop of 1939 prior to Nov. 1st., as compared with 1,573 bales for the crop of 1938. 90 kinds of Type are ready to do your printing at The Star.
