The 2012 Indian football season came to an end Saturday night with a loss to the #2 ranked Milford Bulldogs. The Indians went into the game underdogs, but that didn’t deter them from showing everyone they weren’t going down without a fight. The Bulldogs were first on the scoreboard, but with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter, EJ Borchers ran the ball five yards for his first touchdown of the night. The Bulldogs answered with two touchdowns, but the Indians' fight never died. With just :21 seconds left in the half, Stephen Austermann scored on an 8-yard run. Borchers was two-for-two on PATs and the Indians went into the half down just 24-16. The Bulldogs led off the second half scoring, but the Indians answered with their own score as Borchers escaped the Bulldog defense for a 45-yard run with 8:38 remaining. His PAT was good and the Indians once again trailed by eight points, 32-24. The Bulldogs scored again to close out the third quarter ahead 40-24. The 4th quarter found the Indians without a score as fumbles and lost yardage proved costly. The Bulldogs ended the game with class, kneeling the ball to close out the game 56-24. Of the five losses the Indians had this season, three of those teams are still in the playoffs and have a combined record of 50-7. That’s something to be proud of. The Indians took on tough opponents, and that experience helped them close out the 2012 season with a Regional playoff round berth that was 16 years overdue. The coaches would like to thank everyone who has been a part of this year’s success. Many have traveled far and endured the cold to show their support and it is very much appreciated.
In basketball news, the junior high teams lost their first games of the season to Rochelle last Monday night. The girls, led by lead scorer Tori Morrison, lost 22-32. The boys were plagued with fouls and found themselves finishing the game three-on-five. A valiant effort was given by Ethan Martin, Giles Lockhart, and Blaize Lopez who battled a Hornet full-court press almost to the final buzzer. The varsity Lady Indians took on a tough Harper team last Tuesday and gave the Lady Longhorns a great game, falling short of a victory but holding the Horns to under 35 points.
