October was bully awareness month. A survey sent out to students during this month indicated that respect among students and teachers is high but interactions between peers seems a little less positive. Students indicate that respect between classmates seems low due to the impact of negative comments. Communication has been sent to teachers helping them to communicate how important it is for students to treat each other with respect. Respect for teachers, family and even peers is highly important. The survey indicated that many conversations between students have powerful effects. Words are really damaging and many students do not have the ability to understand this. Maturity plays a big role in the reason that young adults feel compelled to make fun of others or say damaging remarks. Many times this is looked at as just “play talk” but the results can be damaging to those not equipped with coping mechanisms. It is difficult for many students to rise “above” certain remarks. It is even more difficult for those that might not be target of the comments but hear them about others, to stand up and say something. Nobody wants to be the target of malicious comments! Wrong is wrong. Teachers are being asked to make a point to remind students that it is important to talk respectfully to friends and peers alike. Emotions can run high when comments catch you off guard. Many students might pretend like they can handle rude comments, but that is how a bully starts to gain power. It is all about a power struggle that many young adults are not ready to endure. Incidents of cyberbullying have risen in the nation. Many states have incorporated bullying and cyberbulling laws. According to an online CNN article. “First, the laws would incorporate cyber-bullying into the category of third-degree stalking, a class A misdemeanor. ‘This behavior is identified as a course of conduct using electronic communications that is likely to cause a fear of harm, or emotional distress to a person under the age of 21, said a report issued by the Independent Democratic Conference this month.” (Debucquoy-Dodley, D. New York looks to ‘modernize’ cyberbullying laws. September 27, 2011).Maturity will help, but we are committed to presenting a front that all talk should be respectful. The way you treat people says more about your character than anything, and that is what we hope to instill in all San Saba ISD Students. Octubre fue el mes para tomar conciencia del bully (o acoso). Una encuesta entre los estudiantes indico que el respeto entre estudiantes y maestros es bueno pero la interaccion entre sus compañeros parece ser menos positiva. Los estudiantes indicaron que el respeto entre sus compañeros es bajo debido a los comentarios negativos. Informacion fue envidada a los maestros para que les informen a los estudiantes la importancia de tratarse uno al otro con respeto. El respeto a los maestros, la familia y sus compañeros es muy importante. La encuesta indico que muchas conversaciones entre estudiantes tienen efectos muy fuertes. Las palabras causan mucho daño y muchos estudi-antes no entienden eso. La madurez juega un gran papel y aveces es la razon porque muchos de los jovenes se sienten obligados a burlarse de otros o decirles comentarios dañinos. Muchas veces lo toman como juego de palabras mas sin enbargo los resultados pueden ser muy dañinos para las personas que no lo entienden como juego. Es muy dificil para muchos estudiantes sobresalir de los comentarios negativos. Y aveces es mas dificil para los que nisiquiera son el blanco de los comentarios pero los escuchan y es muy dificil enfrentarlos y decir algo. A nadie le gusta ser el blanco de comentarios malintencionados! Lo malo es lo malo. A los maestros se les a pedido que les recuerden a los estudiantes la importancia de hablar con respeto a sus amigos y compañeros por igual. Los animos se pueden caldiar cuando los comentarios te toman por sorpresa. Muchos estudiantes pueden pretender que ellos pueden aguantar los comentarios groseros pero haci es como un bully (o acosador) puede estar adquiriendo el poder. Es una lucha de poder que muchos de los estudiantes aun no estan listos para sobrellevar. Incidentes de cyberbullying (acoso por el internet) han ido en aumento en esta nacion. Muchos estados an implementado leyes sobre el bullying (acoso) y el cyberbullying (acoso por internet).De acuerdo con un articulo en la pagina de CNN. “Primero las leyes incorporaran el cyberbully-ing en la categoria de tercer grado de acoso, un delito menor tipo A. “Este comportamiento esta indentificado como un tipo de conducta que utilize comunica-cion electronica que pueda causar daño, o afliccion mental a una persona menor de 21,’ esto fue escrito este mes en un reporte publicado por la Conferencia Democrata Independiente.”(Debucquoy-Dodley, D. New York busca modernizar las leyes de cyberbullying.Septiembre 27, 2011).La madurez ayudara, pero nosotros estamos comprome-tidos a presentar y dirigir a que todas las conversaciones sean con respeto. La manera que tratas a otras personas habla mas de tu caracter que cualquier otra cosa y eso es lo que queremos inculcar en los estudiantes de San Saba ISD.
