On November 8, 2012, the Pierian Study Club met at the home of Cherry Kay Lange. Co-hostesses for the meeting were Donna Baker, Kathleen Hawkins, Patty Shaw, Linda Sloan and Rebecca Whitley. Other members present were Connie Adams, Hilary Adams, Ann Allison, Nicole Bagley, Sharon Clawson, Barbara Gilger, Sandy Kuykendall, Ann McElroy, Lynn McHenry, Joycelyn McRorey, Anita Miles, Martine Miller, Kay Nettleship, Debbie Shahan, Sandy Smith, Vickie Stevenson, Louise Williams, Anna Wilson, Bebe Bagley, Millie Burnham, Bebe Faught, and Betty Jo Miller.Mrs. Lange graciously welcomed guests as co-hostesses served slices of pumpkin roll and cranberry and orange chutney garnished with fresh mint and powdered sugar. A side of assorted flavored pecans and a choice of spiced cider, coffee, or iced water completed the menu. Autumn floral pieces and seasonal gourds adorned both the serving and meeting areas.Connie Adams then introduced the day’s program, Never the Same, as presented by Mike Kearby. Mr. Kearby is an award winning author of nine novels and one graphic novel. His works include The Devouring-Kavachi’s Rise, The 13th Baktun, the Resonance, The Taken and the 2011 Will Rogers Award Winner for Best Adult Fiction, A Hundred Miles to Water. Mr. Kearby’s historical presentation described the cultural assimilation of the Plains Indians dating from prehistoric times to the close of the Plains Indian War in the latter half of the nineteenth century. At the close of the program, President Miles, thanked Mr. Kearby for his informative and provocative presentation. She then called the meeting to order with Sandy Kuykendall leading members in the Club Collect. Ms. Miles then called upon Sandy Smith, club secretary, to read the roll call and the reading of the minutes. The minutes for the October meeting were approved as read.Treasurer, Louise Williams, gave the monthly financial report. Mrs. Williams then discussed the annual Angel Tree Project with members and stated that at the close of the meeting members could select the “angel” that they wish to sponsor. Corresponding Secretary, Cherry Kay Lange, read a moving note of thanks from former President, Kathleen Hawkins, for the club’s donation to the county museum and the engraved plaque in honor of her past presidency and service to the club. Patty Shaw, in lieu of the absent Projects Committee Chair, Loy Nell Behrens, discussed the Wreaths Across America, a program sponsored by the Daughters of the Confederacy which honors veterans of all wars and conflicts. Based on the recommendation of her fellow committee members, Mrs. Shaw then made the motion that the study club make an annual donation of $60 in support of the program. The motion was unanimously approved. Anna Wilson, Entertainment Chair, announced that her committee will meet in the near future to prepare for the Christmas Guest Tea. Kay Nettleship, Membership Chair, reported that there were no changes in the present status of membership. Sharon Clawson, Yearbook Chair, announced that the March meeting would be on March 7th rather than March 14th. She also noted that the meeting would begin at 4:00 p.m. rather than the traditional 3:00 p.m. During announcements, Mrs. McElroy invited members to attend the Veteran’s Day activities planned for the city of San Saba. Activities include a breakfast with local veterans to be held at the San Saba ISD campus; a program, later that morning, with guest speaker, Eddie Sanderson of Austin, Texas, at the Blue Star Historical Marker located on Highway 190 East; and following the program, a group sing-along at the San Saba Senior Center with Dan Harrington, First United Methodist Church Minister, and guitarist, Bill Hulgan. In closing, President Miles thanked Mrs. Lange along with her co-hostesses for their time and preparations. Mrs. Clawson then announced that the next meeting of the Pierian Study Club will be a Christmas Guest Tea from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on December 13th at the home of Ella Burton-Pavich. Co-hostesses for the guest tea will be Entertainment Committee members, Hilary Adams, Nicole Bagley, Ella Burton-Pavich, Barbara Gilger, Sandy Kuykendall, Cherry Kay Lange, Lynn McHenry, Clione Rochat, and Anna Wilson, Committee Chair.
