The San Saba High School Cross Country Teams left San Saba last Friday, Nov 2, traveled across five county’s; woke up Saturday the 3rd, laced up their shoes and lined up against the best twenty-four Cross Country Teams in Region II. The Lady’s main competition was the Hamlin Pipers, who before Saturday, were undefeated and according to most of the Coaches in the State were going to win the Region running away. Key words in the previous sentence is ‘were undefeated’, our Lady Armadillos shocked everyone in attendance by beating the unbeatable and capturing (according to Jackie Dyer) San Saba’s first Regional Cross Country Championship. No individual names will be mentioned this week because this was a TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP.The Boy’s Team ran great and with amazing heart, but just did not have the same results as the Lady’s, but still finished 9th out of twenty-four teams. It is always a good feeling for any coach when you come across not only a talented but hard working athlete, and even more rewarding when the talent and hard work manage to come together and allow an outstanding young man like Hector Paez reach a dream in his Sr. year. Hector placed eighth overall at Region II Meet, qualifying him for the State competition as an individual. I read last week, that anything is possible if you strive for the impossible. This Saturday, Nov 10th starting at 10:00 a.m. at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock these young men and women will lace their shoes up for the last time this season. I personally do not feel there is anything impossible for this group. Every workout and meet this season I walk away inspired by the effort and attitudes displayed by this team. This town really has something to be proud of in these kids. —SPECIAL REWARDS COME TO THOSE WHO GIVE SPECIAL EFFORTS.
