The San Saba 5th and 6th grade team traveled to Lampasas this last Saturday for the 1st round of the playoffs against the Llano Yellow jackets. The little dillos played their hearts out, but came up on the short end of the stick 11-8. The armadillos did a great job of controlling the ball and had a “bend but not break” attitude on defense. The dillos used their running game to their advantage and drove the ball 45 yards, where Erik Argote was able to push it over for our only score late in the 2nd quarter. Joe Watson kicked the extra point making it 8-0 going into the half. The defense only allowed 6 offensive plays in the 1st half. The opening drive of the 2nd half Llano was able to set up a drive that tied the game 8-8. After several drives stalled out the Dillo D was able to hold the jackets on 4th down and take over with 3 minutes left in the game. After 2 plays the Dillos fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Llano. The Yellow jackets drove the ball down the field, but once again the defense held strong and kept the Yellow jackets out of the end zone. With only 12 seconds left in the game Llano kicked a 25 yard field goal that secured the win for them. The boys came a long ways since the last time they played Llano, the 1st time the two team’s met Llano won 26-0 and they had a 5-1 record going into the game. It’s hard losing a game on a last second field goal, but we couldn’t be any prouder of the way the boys played. I am looking forward to seeing these guys make big playoff runs in the future, the talent and heart is there, it’s only a matter of time before they become champions again. I would like to say a special thanks to all of sponsors in town. The money they donated went a long ways in helping secure the future of Armadillo football.
