The San Saba Armadillos had their open week last Friday. The teams took the extra time to get ready for the next game against the Hico Tigers. San Saba will enter the game with a 3-4 record and 1-0 in district play. Hico comes into the game with 6-2 record and 2-0 in district.This gives us the opportunity to look back on the season so far. San Saba opened the season with a 24-6 win over the Tolar Rattlers. The injury bug hit the Armadillos in the game. Jordan Watson hurt a knee and missed 4 games and Russton Ellis hurt an elbow but missed only 1 game.The following week, San Saba used a late field goal by Rodney Ortiz to beat the Early Longhorns 20-17. Junior quarterback Kelan Verette broke his hand late in the game. Verette has played safety each week but did not see any action at quarterback until a few plays against De Leon. He was used a running back against Thorndale for a few plays.The Armadillos lost the game against a good Ballinger Bearcat team 39-7. Late in the first half, fullback Russell Lowe hurt his quad and missed 3 games.The Hamilton Bulldogs provided the opposition for the Armadillos the following week. The game was a defensive struggle with the Bulldogs earning a 14-6 win.San Saba traveled to the defending state champion Mason Punchers next. It was a rough first half for the Dillos but the second half was even between the two teams with Mason prevailing 40-14.Homecoming had the Thorndale Bulldogs coming to Rogan Field. The game saw 14 turnovers by both teams with Thorndale getting the 9-6 win.San Saba opened district play at De Leon next. The Armadillos dominated the game and won 41-0. Russell Lowe returned to action for the Armadillos.Sean Argote leads the team in rushing with 709 yards on 157 carries and 4 scores. Argote has the lone touchdown reception on the year as part of his 3 catches. Verette is next with 202 yards despite missing 3 games on offense. Garrett Hartranft has 172 yards on 29 carries and 1 reception. Jarrett Mathis moved to quarterback when Verette got hurt. He has done a good job completing 19 of 55 passes and rushing for 169 yards and a touchdown. Russell Lowe adds 110 yards rushing and 2 scores to go with his 6 catches. Kolton Ellis has 105 yards and a score along with a catch. TJ Hibler has 4 rushes for 98 yards but has 2 touchdowns. Diego Montoya scored a touchdown against De Leon moving from his tackle position to running back.Cosme Diaz leads the team in receptions with 9 for 97 yards and 4 rushes for 20 yards. Isaac Zepeda and Juan Ortega have 2 catches each. Rodney Ortiz has made 9 of 10 field goal attempts and 13 PAT.Kelan Verette leads the team with 2 interceptions on defense. Mathis, Ortega and Argote have an interception each. Ortega, Jordan Watson, Kolton Ellis, Nathan Amstead and Aaron Perez have recovered 2 fumbles a piece. Lowe, Argote, Montoya and Michael McKinnerney have earned 1 each.Last week Hico entertained the De Leon Bearcats, coming away with a victory 29-22 while Santo traveled to Goldthwaite. The Eagles earned their first district win 68-19. This week Goldthwaite travels to De Leon. Santo has the open week. The Hico Tigers come to Rogan Field. The game will be crucial for both teams in determining playoff seeding. Kickoff is set for 7:30. Come out and support the Armadillos as they drive for the district title.
