Dear Editor, My wife and I are retired and full time RVers. Some other RVers told us San Saba was a must stop. We arrived planning on staying one nite with just enough time to “see” the town. The first day we started at the San Saba River Nature Park. There we countered a group planting a wild flower landscape and they invited us to join in. An hour and a half later, we were sweating and now tired, too tired to explore the park as we had planned. One of the group asked if we had lunch plans. She took us to a fabulous restaurant where the people were so friendly. She owned a large pecan patch on the San Saba river and invited us to visit there. We hiked along the river, admired the majestic oaks, and smelled the bat droppings under the bat condos. The next day we decided to stay another day to see the sights. Your town is a very well kept secret. We walked around the parks and downtown, sampling the wine, pecans, and other attractions. Unfortunately, I forgot to replace the fuel cap on my auxiliary diesel tank. Lost it. I went to the local parts store, and they were all very concerned and tried to help. Finally I was referred to a hardware store. The gentleman knew of my predicament and suggested I use a plastic plug until I could get a replacement. He got a 3 foot long pipe wrench and we removed the now obsolete mounting plate.I tried to give him $5 but he refused and told me to come back again when I needed something!I could give you other friendly encounters: the lady behind a counter, the smiling school boy who opened the door for us, the new golf pro who showed us the golf center or the mower who did not run over our cable. You may think that water is your most important resource. We can tell you San Saba’s people are a shining gem. We have traveled all over the world. Nowhere is there a more friendly place. We picked up a real estate brochure. We will definitely return and maybe stay a lot longer.Jan and Paul UngerRockdale, TX 76567
