30 Years Ago October 21, 1982The murder of 77 year old Marie Clark is still unsolved as local authorities wait for pathologist and lab reports to return from Austin. Mrs. Clark's body was found at approximately 2:20p.m. Monday, October 11 in the back room of her shop by a customer. A preliminary autopsy report showed that the cause of death was smothering and the victim also suffered several brain concussions due to blows to the head.The deadline has been extended to Nov. 15 for those preparing family histories for the upcoming historical book by the San Saba County Historical Society. New directors for the County - City Municipal Airport were elected at the County Commissioners meeting on Monday, Oct. 11th. The following men were elected for a two year term: George Amthor, George Amthor III, Mark Amthor, Doug Hayes, Pat Murray, Keith Shahan, Jim Childress, Thomas Bowden, James Reavis, Bill Dyer, Dee Kilpatrick and Bud Woodward.Mary Lindsey sold much of her art works, clocks, paintings, and rubber guns during the Octoberfest in Giddings.50 Years AgoOctober 22, 1962Approximately 25 San Saba County ranch men attended the meeting held in the district court room at the Courthouse last Monday night, pertaining to the screwworm program. A set of slides was given during the program which was presented by T.N. Wood, County Chairman and Billy Kidd, County Agent.The kindergarten class of Mrs. Earl Gatliff visited The San Saba News and Star office and shop early Thursday morning, Oct. 18, for their weekly field trip. Class members included Debra Swindle, Ronnie Crim, Leslie Owen, Phillis Johnson, Cherie Brown, Donna Stallings, Ruthie Whitley, JoAnn Angerstein, Katey Jones, Lynn Hamrick, Amy Harrison, Roy Dean Boswell, Forest Dickison, Kaye Lusty, Melissa Watkins, Nita Bessent, Jana Gatliff, Kathy Poe, Joe Brad Bowen, Joan Williams and DeAnn Oldham.The San Saba County 4-H Club Council elected Barbara Maddox as chairman for the coming year at their regular quarterly meeting held last Saturday, Oct. 20. Other officers elected were Nancy Kidd, Vice-Chairman; Winston Sawyer, Secretary/Treasurer; Jane O'Banon, Recreational Chairman; and Sheila McDowell, Reporter.60 Years AgoOctober 23, 1952Jack B. Miller of San Saba has been named County Chairman for the forthcoming fund appeal in Texas for the United Service Organization (U.S.O.).Three San Saba County hunters bagged red mule deer in a hunt near Laramie, Wyoming last weekend. Glenn Patton brought back the largest one, an 8-pointer weighing 185 pounds drawn. M.O. Patton got one weighing 135 pounds and Leon Hartley shot one which weighed 150 pounds.Clifford Wilson who made all-district for two years while playing on the Golden Armadillo team here in San Saba, is a freshman at San Angelo College where he is reported to be making an excellent showing on defense in the Ram backfield.Classified advertising: Well-improved 70 acres with partly furnished home and farm tools, goes at $8,000.
