Only God Can Make a TreeI think that I shall never seeA poem lovely as a tree . . .A tree that looks at God all dayAnd lifts her leafy arms to pray . . .Poems are made by fools like me,But only God can make a tree.- Joyce KilmerTree, as Joyce Kilmer reminded us in his famous poem, are lovely creations of God. The poem was written in 1913 and first published in Poetry magazine. Kilmer was only 27 at the time, but he saw only five more summers in his lifetime. He was killed by German gunfire in France on July 30, 1918.
