Homecoming Week has come and gone. What a fun-filled week! The cheerleaders always put together themes for each day of the week. I must say Nerd Day was my favorite! It was so fun to see kids in their dad’s old pants, suspenders and the ever-present taped up glasses! The week’s final hoorah was the infamous “pageant” during the pep rally! This year’s competition was fierce, but Blaze, AKA Blanca, was crowned by past “beauty” Sam Martin! In football news, the junior high team improved to 3-1 with their decisive win over Brownwood-VLA. Jordan Lilly led off the scoring with an interception return with only twenty seconds off of the clock. Uriel Arredondo kicked the PAT. Just over two minutes later Arredondo got his first interception, returned it to the end zone and did double-duty by kicking the PAT. On the Patriot’s next possession Kagen Hernandez recovered a fumble. Kellen Everett scored on the Indians’ next drive. Arredondo’s PAT was good. With 1:21 on the clock Jason Karr, assisted by Jeron Grubbs, sacked the quarterback in the end zone, causing a safety and bringing the score to 26-0. With 1:06 left Grubbs scored his first TD of the night. Arredondo’s PAT was good and the Indians led 34-0. Blaize Lopez had back-to-back quarterback sacks to hold the Patriot’s scoreless. Chase Spellman led off the Indian defense in the second quarter with a quarterback sack with 5:45 on the clock. With 4:31 left Karr scored his first touchdown of his JH career. Arredondo sailed in the PAT, bringing the score to 42-0. The Indians’ defense held strong and, with 4:20 left in the half, Spellman sacked the quarterback. Spellman recovered a Patriot fumble with 2:55 left. With 2:32 remaining Hernandez scored and Arredondo kicked his sixth PAT of the night. The Patriots scored, cutting the Indians’ lead to 50-6. With 2:06 on the clock Ethan Martin sacked the quarterback. Karr’s quarterback sack with :32 in the half kept the Patriots from another score. The third quarter was another defensive stop with Spellman’s quarterback sack early in the quarter. Hernandez scored the Indians’ final TD with 3:13 on the clock, ending the game at 56-6. Coach Simpson was very proud of the strong defensive front and Coach Martin was excited to see the team’s newest players take control of the game. The Alumni dinner was held at the Fire Hall before the Homecoming game. Lots of food and fellowship was enjoyed by all. Speakers J. L. Coffman and Charles Perry shared some great memories. Mrs. Danna Cavness Seale was named the Coming Home Queen. Thanks to the Booster Club and all who helped! > The Homecoming game against Summit Christian got off to a similar start as the junior high Indians when Logan Lopez scored just seconds into the game. Jorge Labrador scored his first touchdown of the night with 4:57 on the clock. Stephen Austermann kicked the PAT, bringing the score to 14-0. Labrador recovered the onside kick, keeping the ball in Indian possession. Seconds later Austermann ran in the end zone. The Indians elected to go for the extra point and Labrador found pay dirt, bringing the Indians’ lead to 21-0. Summit scored with 3:26 to go in the quarter cutting the lead to 21-6. Burnam Sloan led the second quarter action off with an Eagle fumble recovery with 6:09 remaining in the half, setting up a touchdown by Lopez. Austermann’s PAT was good. With 2:40 remaining Trey Shannon found himself in the end zone. Austermann’s PAT extended the lead to 37-6. The quick defensive action of Israel Trinidad recovered the onside quick, once again keeping the ball in possession of the Indians. Soon after, Austermann ran into the end zone and doubled as kicker, sailing the ball through the uprights. Summit defense held the Indians from scoring to end by the mercy rule and as the half’s buzzer rang the Eagles scored and ran in the extra point, cutting the lead to 45-13. The Homecoming court led off the halftime activities. Holly Vaughn was named Football Sweetheart and Stephen Austermann was elected Football Beau. Nishady Lanza was named the Homecoming Princess and the 2012 Homecoming Queen is Lory Vaughn. Congratulations to the Homecoming Court of Talli Morrison, Cameron Turner, Desiree Shannon, Megan Oliver and Pashion Monroe! Austermann led the second half action with consecutive touchdowns with 7:36 and 4:51 on the clock, once again bringing the score within one touchdown’s reach to the game’s end. The Eagles fought back, scoring with 3:44 remaining in the quarter, cutting the Indian lead to 57-19. Labrador returned the kickoff, putting the Indians a PAT away from closing out the game.
