Tommy Ray Grozier, age 81, died peacefully in his sleep October 3, 2012. Tommy was born in Cisco, Texas, but counted San Saba as his home as that is where he spent his school years. He shared many happy memories with family and friends about growing up in a small rural town. His tales of raising and riding calves, naming his pig after his girlfriend, and cleaning out the chicken house engendered many a chuckle. His recounting of high school shenanigans with his buddies served to entertain friends and embellish many a sermon. At age 16, Tommy felt the call of the Lord to be a preacher. This was a cause of amazement to many in the community, but a dear retired pastor saw potential in the teenager and served as a mentor, teaching him not only to craft a sermon but to be a pastor in the truest sense of the word. He went on to graduate from Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, pastoring small Texas churches while getting his formal education. Upon graduation from the seminary, he was called to pastor First Baptist Church of Bellevue, Nebraska. He and his wife Anne had to look that one up on the map, as they had never lived outside of Texas. His ministry took him to Hawaii; Austin, Texas; and Maryland – or as he said, “from sea to shining sea.” In 1982 he became pastor of First Baptist Church of Universal City, Texas, from which he retired and moved to Boerne in 1996 after 46 years in full-time pastoral ministry. He was cherished for good sermons and exceptional pastoring. Those who knew him knew they were loved. Tommy is survived by his wife, Anne; daughters ,Sherilyn Palermo and husband, Rick and Tamara Dotson and husband Herman; grandson, Richard Blalock; granddaughters, Victoria and Anna Palermo; and a sister, Mary Jane Holton. A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 12, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the San Saba Cemetery in San Saba, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Christian Job Corps of Kendall County, 216 West Highland Dr., Boerne, TX 78006.
