There is really nothing that can be said about the weather except for the cool mornings that we have enjoyed for the last couple of days, but if we don’t receive some rain before too long there is not going to be any green weeds or grass for this coming fall and winter. The home of Jackie & Charlene Brister was very busy over Labor Day weekend, a big birthday party was held Friday, August 31 thru Monday, September 3 for Janet Brister & her friend from Palacios Darlene Biffel, on-in-laws Carl Adams & Steve Raesz. People came from Brenham, Dripping Springs, Buda, Cedar Park, San Saba, Dublin, Palacios, New Braunfels, Lampasas, Brownwood, Lewisville, Taylor, Cherokee, Waco, Mission, Grape Creek, and Houston.The.Leaning Bluff Lodge was full of family and lots of fun and lots of good food and wishes for a very happy birthday. The Barefoot Camp & RV park had a big bunch of folks too.Raymond, Lewvon, Bobby, Debbie and Laura Beth attended the Baxter reunion which was held Sunday, September the 2nd at the Bend United Methodist Church. The Baxter reunion has been held in Lampasas for the last several years. This year it was decided to return it to the Bend. The attendance increased dramatically and the attendees remained at the church for a much longer visit. It was enjoyed by all and plans were being made to do it again next year.The Democrat Women Association of Lampasas held their Annual Labor Day Picnic at Hancock Park in Lampasas to hear political speeches, good food, a cake and cup sale and lots of talk. Lewvon and Orabeth each provided a cake for the sale. Their two cakes brought the highest price in the sale. Laura Beth Hicks made 24 cup cakes and they produced more than all the cakes. The Hicks’ cooked and served the food. Everyone enjoyed the activities.The Millicans Pat and Bonnie spent several days in Fort Worth this week. TCU had the ribbon-cutting for their new football stadium on Thursday. Bonnie reported that it was awesome. They met old friends and had a great time.Their son Geoff drove up from San Antonio and joined them for the game Saturday night. TCU played Grambling State and won 56-0. But Grambling won the halftime with their fabulous band. No one got up and ran to the concession stand at halftime, as they didn’t want to miss seeing the band perform. Their band received roaring approval and got several standing ovations. Tommie and Jane Tinney had lots of visitors over the Labor Day weekend, some welcome and some not so welcome. It seems one of their visitor’s brought an extra guest along called a virus, not meaning to for sure, but it did happen. It started with one on Sunday and three more by Monday morning. There were two grandkids who were visiting their grandmother Mrs. Freeland that also got sick. One of the kids had been sick three days before coming and was okay when they arrived, but the germ must have still been present when they arrived. Everyone was busy either giving out medicine or cleaning the bathroom every time some one had a problem. It was a weekend that won’t soon be forgotten. Tommie and Jane lucked out and didn’t catch the bug.The visitors were: Gary, Melinda, Jacob, Shelby Freeland from Canyon Lake, Mindy, Nicholas, Brady, Erica Freeland from Grand Prairie, Ann and Tommy Reyes, Chris Munoz for Richland Springs, Alton and Trevor Tinney of Richland Springs. Trevor, Brandy Delqist and their four children of Buda, Kenny Good from Houston, Bryan Taylor of Dallas.Bill and Jo Price was on the road Thursday going to Midland to attend the ARCO retiree luncheon. It was a change of pace for them, because it is usually on the road to see a doctor which seems to happening more and more.Don’t believe them when they tell you how swell the golden years are, because they are not telling the truth, just ask someone is getting on in years. Think brass would have been much better or even tin. Where the gold comes in is when you pay for all the medical and medicines that is required to keep you going.Jane Clark spent some time in New Mexico this past week celebrating her birthday early with her sister Elsa Dean Shirley. They went to the Clovis Musical Festival Thursday and Friday night. Friday night they had people who impersonated Buddy Holley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Richie Valens and Saturday night it was the Fire Ball and Chubby Checker entertained everyone. Thursday night Boyd fixed a birthday steak supper for her Saturday Elsa Dean and Jane went garage shopping and visited Grandson Jessie his parent’s Myra and Jerry Skinner.Mebbie Eckhoff reported that she and Leon was in Santa Anna Tuesday to watch their daughter-in-law Amy Eckhoff and her Volley Ball team from Holley play in a tournament. The big cities of Gustine, Sterling City, Santa Anna and Holley. Holley lost the first two games and won the rest, so they did okay.She and Leon have been busy with their sheep as they are lambing. She reported that she lost two due to the heat, but the rest seemed to be just fine.Jackie and Charlene Brister were in Cherokee Saturday for their big fish fry and fund raiser for the Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department.. She reported that they had lots of help from friends which helped to make it a big success and they did appreciate all the help.R.J. Henniger has been in California visiting his daughter Jill Harrington and her family he will be returning this week. He doesn’t like to be away from the Bend too long and Bend is not the same without R.J. Lesa Preece reported that son Eric Hernandez and his wife Ashley of Lampasas came out to the Bend Sunday and had lunch with her and son Clay Bradley. They looked at her chicken coop which needs to be enlarged to take care of all the new baby chicks that Lesa has. She is the chicken lady of downtown Bend. You have Bad Bob’s Bait store and now Lesa’s hatchery the Bend economy is growing by leaps and bounds.The Bend Community meeting will be Saturday, September 15, at 6:30 P.M. The meal will be a cover dish supper and everyone is invited. Bring your favorite dish and/or dessert. The up coming fish fry and cake auction, silent auction and games for the children will be planned. It will be earlier this year because of prior comments of Jackie Brister. He will only be able to prepare the fish on October 6. Everyone mark your calendar on that date.Happy birthday greetings go out to Rebecca Dowdy and Robbie Eckhoff who will celebrate a birthday September 14, to Megan Stewart who will celebrate her birthday September 15, to Chas Herd whose birthday is September 16, to Tommy Pulatie and LaFayne Porter who will be celebrating a birthday September 18.Congratulations go out to Leon and Mebbie Eckhoff who will be celebrating their anniversary September 14.
