A successful first week of school is behind us. It is so fun to see eager young ones, reluctant middle school students, and passive high school students on the first day of school. I know some were ready for school, while others were bored and ready to see friends they missed over the summer. The Indians took on the Abilene Christian Panthers, the 2011 Division 1 TAAPS defending state champs, on Saturday. The Indians had a rough start and quickly found themselves down 22-0. They fought back when Robert Brewer scored on a 13 yard pass from E. J. Borchers. Soon after, Burnam Sloan drove it in on a 15 yard run. Borchers’ kick brought the Indians to a 30-14 trailing to begin the second quarter. The Panthers scored, but Sloan blocked the kick to keep the Indians within reach. Trey Shannon connected with Stephen Austermann for a 21 yard touchdown pass. The Panthers quickly answered back with a score. Borchers returned the kick-off return with a nice 45 yard run. With 2:01 remaining in the first half, Shannon threw an 18 yard pass to Logan Lopez. With 8:36 remaining in the third quarter, the Indians had cut the Panther lead to 42-34. Mishaps and miscues kept the Indians from scoring again and the game ended with a 68-34 loss. Borchers led the defense, along with a quarterback sack by Austermann and an interception by Shannon.
