On a humid evening with no wind at all, the San Saba Armadillos outlasted the Tolar Rattlers 24-6. San Saba used two touchdowns late in the final period to put away a close game.The Dillos won the toss and deferred to the second half. Rodney Ortiz teed the ball and kicked it inside the 5 yard line where the Rattlers brought it out to the 30. Using a good passing attack and the running of Cory Solomon, Tolar moved to the San Saba 30 before a bad handoff resulted in a fumble that was recovered by Sean Argote at the Dillo 43.On 3rd down Argote got free around the right side and raced to the end zone for a 50 yard score. Ortiz added the PAT and San Saba had a 7-0 lead four minutes into the season.The defenses took over the game. Tolar had to punt on their next possession and San Saba drove to the 12 before turning the ball over on downs at the Rattler 21. Jarrett Mathis ended the next Rattler drive with an interception. Russell Lowe came on to punt after the Dillos gained one first down. The Lowe punt rolled dead at the Tolar 1 yard line. The team traded punts when San Saba got the ball back at the Dillo 28. Junior quarterback Kelan Verette got free on 2 long runs that moved the ball to the Tolar 10. Rodney Ortiz was called on to attempt the field goal. The ball hit the cross bar and skipped through the uprights for the 27 yard field goal making the score 10-0.Tolar tried to move but time ran out in the half.San Saba got the ball to start the second half. The Dillos lost the ball when Rattler cornerback Landon Morris picked off a Verette pass at the Tolar 20.Both teams had to punt before Tolar got the ball at the Rattler 14. A screen pass to Cory Solomon netted 16 yards. Solomon then broke through the line and raced towards the end zone. Sean Argote caught Solomon from behind and tackled him at the Armadillo 2. Three plays later, Morris faked out the Dillo defense and scooted around the right side for the score. The try for point was blocked by Luis Vega and San Saba held on to a lead of 10-6.The Armadillos got a good return from Garrett Hartranft to the 47 yard line. A fumble on the first play was recovered by Connor Robinson of Tolar. Sean Argote got the ball back for the Armadillos on an interception of Corbin Wood. Neither team could move the ball and traded punts into the 4th quarter.A Russell Lowe punt was bobbled by Tolar and finally recovered at the Rattler 16 with 7:06 to show in the game. Two plays and a penalty later, the ball was at the 17 yard line when Wood was flushed out of the pocket back to the 1 when he threw the ball towards the sideline. The resulting intentional grounding penalty left the ball at the 1 and 4th down. The ensuing punt was fielded by Kelan Verette at the Tolar 43. Verette got to the right sideline and avoided tacklers for the touchdown. Rodney Ortiz kicked the PAT and the score was 17-6 with 4:58 left.Tolar was unable to gain a first down and punted to San Saba. The Armadillos started at the Dillo 40.The Dillos earned a first down before Kolton Ellis got a Verette handoff on a dive read and raced 49 yards for a score. Ortiz was good on the PAT and the score was 24-6.Tolar moved the ball before time ran out leaving the score at 24-6.Sean Argote led the San Saba rushers with 76 yards on 17 carries and 1 TD. Kelan Verette added 67 yards on 11 rushes. Kolton Ellis gained 49 yards and a score and Russell Lowe chipped in 45 yards. Cory Solomon of Tolar led both teams with 128 yards on 19 carries.Verette completed one pass to Juan Ortega for 1 yard. In other district action, De Leon beat Roscoe, Hico got past Dublin, Santo routed Ranger and Goldthwaite lost to McGregor.
