69 Years Ago September 9, 1943 Probably for the first time in the history of San Saba county its citizens will have the unique experience and privilege of playing host to three current movie stars, direct from Hollywood when beauteous Mary Lee, rising young star of Republic Pictures, Elaine Sheppard, famed Powers model, now a star with RKO pictures, and handsome young George Byron of Republic, will appear in person at the gigantic War Bond Rally on the San Saba court house plaza next Thursday, September 16th at 9a.m.The Cat Claw school was the first San Saba rural school to open this year on Monday, September 6th, with an enrollment of six pupils. Mrs. Dick Robbins is the teacher.Word reached San Saba this week that State Representative Reuben Senterfitt has just been sworn in as an Ensign in the Navy at Houston.Lt. Smith M. Walker of the A.A. F. B.S., Big Spring Bombardier School has received a promotion from 2nd Lt. to First Lt. Lt. Walker is an Instructor and just returned from Denver, Colorado, where he took a six week course in Automatic Piloting.80 Years Ago September 1, 1932J.T. and J.P. McConnell this week have moved their grocery store into the building located on the same site where their father, J.W. McConnell, founded his store in San Saba in 1897.Ace Howell of Chappel will attend Sam Houston State Teachers' College this year. Hazlett's Pharmacy will install a modern soda fountain and beginning with this month, all kinds of cold drinks and ice cream and other soda fountain products will be served, according to Harry W. Hazlett.John Haltmer, W.G. Kirkpatrick, Quimby Ragsdale and Bill Hibler combined to give the election news to the crowds in San Saba Saturday night. The returns were chalked up on the bulletin board by Randall Stone and were broadcast over a loud speaker made by Quimby Ragsdale. The music as well as the election returns were broadcast to entertain the crowds.A dress of feed sacks at a cost of 54 cents won first place in a contest in the Dilworth Home Demonstration Club in Wells County. Until told differently everyone thought it was a linen dress.100 Years Ago September 5, 1912Rufus Thornton reported to the News the statistics of the livestock shipments from the San Saba Santa Fe pens for the first 12 months after the first train was operated into town. There were 418 cars of stuff shipped out and 43 cars received.Capt. R.O. Harris went to Austin Friday to attend the monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Confederate Home, of which board he is a member.T.C. Thaxton and J.G. Kuykendall, both worthy young men of Cherokee, took the train here Thursday on their way to Chilicothe, Missouri, where they will attend school this winter.Wednesday morning the two gins at San Saba had turned out 391 bales of cotton, the Farmers Union Gin 256 and the Farmers Gin 135. Both are running steady.Prof. W. Jeff Wilcox closed his vocal music class at China Creek Friday night. This was only a ten day class but the people of that thriving community want a singing school normal next summer.
