Sandra Baskin 2012 Ladies Club Champion! This past weekend the San Saba River Golf Course held the annual Club Championship Tournament. It was such a fun event. Sandra has been the Club Champion several years and is an outstanding lady golfer. Flossie Woodward did give her a run for her money by starting the second day play with two birdies. They battled to the end. Flossie has also been the Club Champion in the past. But the last hole for their play #5, Sandra’s drive was on the #6 tee box. Sandra knew she had tree limbs and had to keep her ball low to get to the green and she did just that; but it was a hard screaming shot. The ladies began to look for her ball over the green in the pampas grass, but no, it was in the hole for an eagle! A great finish for our Club Champion! For the first time the club added a Senior Women’s Champion. We have awarded a Senior Men’s Champion for several years. Hallalejah, happy day, and praise the Lord, Anita Miles, yours truly, won this award! You might say she has just about out lived her past rivals and it was definitely on her ‘bucket list’! But it was not an easy victory. Sandee Hartley battled her to the very end. Anita won the Saturday play and Sandee won the Sunday play but the stroke play gave Anita the Senior Women’s Club Championship trophy. All the winners and pictures will be in next week’s San Saba News. All the members had a wonderful day of golf and fellowship. On Sunday there was a pizza party with an assortment of pizzas, cookies, and drinks for lunch for all the participants. You missed out if you didn’t participate in your Club Championship. August 23, 2012 the San Saba Ladies Golf Association met for play day with the Chair for August calling for a game of “Best at Something”, where you are awarded a point for being in the fairway, being on the green in regulation, and for a one putt - less a point for being in a hazard, loosing your ball, or a three putt. Anita Miles won first, and First Low Net, the Putt Pot, and scored the only birdie of the day. Great day for Anita! Second Place went to Jo Ann Snow, Third to Debbie Lee who also scored the Low Gross for the day, and Fourth to Dorothy Sterner. Sandee Hartley, Jo Anne Hardy, Hattie Rogers, and Janet Hoyt rounded out the field of play. Our prayers this week will be for Janet Hoyt, as she has to have surgery on her ankle, that was hurt in a car wreck this past summer. She has been playing golf but with pain and hopefully this will correct her problems. I have a very sad announcement, we are loosing our pro, Keith Harris. Keith has been employed by a golf course near Fort Worth, as the manager of the course. It is a great position for Keith and a step up in his career. We are happy to see this advancement for Keith, but know he is priceless to the San Saba River Golf Course. Keith and Crystal have worked so hard together and have been such an asset to not only our golf course, but to our community. They will be greatly missed. The City Manager, Stan Weik, and the Golf Association Board, Buddy Adams, Rick Baskin, Jerry Minter, Larry Hardin, and Anita Miles, have met and will be taking applications for this position, with a high regard for turf managment. The condition of the golf course is their number one priority. The San Saba River Golf Course is such an asset to the City of San Saba and it’s a great place for fellowship, fun, exercise, meditation, and it’s a great place to be ‘swinging!’
