30 Years Ago August 26, 1982

The local 4-H Club will give away a rifle at a drawing scheduled to be held Sunday, August 29th during the Rotary Club Skeet Shoot. Make your plans now to attend. Mrs. J.C. Till and Mrs. Ruby Bond of Locker, attended a family reunion last Sunday in San Saba Mill Pond Park. About 33 attended this reunion.Oh, boy! Some old boys came in the Cherokee store this last week all upset because they hauled a load of hay all the way to Cherokee County and then had to turn around and bring it back to our Cherokee. Well, we are barely on the map.The Great Plains Conservation Program Committee of the National Association of Conservation Districts met in Vail, Colo. August 9th - 11th. Kenneth Kuykendall of Cherokee, Chairman, presided over the meetings.Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Miles of San Saba, returned August 18th from Paris, France. Mr. Miles, owner of J. Miles, Inc., won the all-expense paid trip for one week with Oldsmobile's "Get Moving Getaway" contest.

69 Years Ago August 26, 1943

With a prospective enrollment of 2152 scholastics in San Saba county, schools of the county and its towns will open their doors for the fall term on September 6th and 9th, it is expected. Petty Officer J.E. Melton of Uncle Sam's mighty sea armada is home on leave to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O.J. Melton of Live Oak. It's his first trip home since Pearl Harbor when his ship, the "Helena" was badly damaged by the Jap sneak attack.Julian C. Traweek Jr., 31, son of Mr. and Mrs. Traweek of Mercury, has recently been commissioned a Chaplain in the Army with the rank of First Lieutenant and is now studying at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., having arrived there August 18th.Arthur Hooten, San Saba Hotel night clerk, was host to 22 guests at a banquet party in the banquet room Friday night. The room was decorated in purple and gold with a large "V" placed on the back wall. An American flag was placed directly in front of the "V" for Victory. Miss Betty LaRue Johnson was unanimously chosen queen of the occasion.

100 Years Ago August 22, 1912

Last Tuesday morning early fire broke out in the very heart of the Hellar cedar brake below Bend and raged furiously most all the day. All day long the heavy volumes of smoke could be plainly seen from San Saba.The San Saba - Bend Onion and Truck Growers will have its regular meeting at the courthouse next Saturday, August 24th. W.R. Baxter is President and W.B. Leverett is Secretary of this association.W.C. Brown, manager of the San Saba Oil Co., has gone to West to consult the stockholders of the marble and oil companies and will go from there to Wichita Falls and look for an expert driller. The boom in the oil fields of north Texas has made it almost impossible to get the experienced drillers to come to a new proposition.G.B. Stark and Henry Hart were in from the Shiloh section Monday. They report the army and boll worms doing considerable damage to the rank cotton and the post oaks.
