The scheduled date for the completion of the renovation work in the SSHS science labs, special education life-skills classroom and teacher workroom is August 10, 2012. According to the onsite construction manager, it appears this project will come on line as scheduled. At the current time the physical high school building is in much disarray, but the staff of SSISD will ensure that the building is ready for the first day of school. The custodial staff has been working around the renovation and proceeding room to room and leaving the renovated space and the hallways to clean until just before the start of school. The science department will be in transition during the 2012-2013 school year. Although the interior science lab will be renovated, the new science lab building will not be completed until later in the school year. This will temporarily require high school science teachers to be in a “go to” situation for the lab space. This means that the science teachers will have separate classrooms and the lab will be open for science teachers to use throughout the day. When the new science building is completed each science teacher will have his or her own science space. During this year of transition science teachers will be sharing classrooms and some high school teachers will temporarily be relocated to the classrooms in San Saba Middle School. Electrical work, some minor plumbing, installation of the mill-work in the science lab and clean up and final check out is just about all that needs to be completed for the high school renovation. On Wednesday, July 18, 2012 the pre-bid meeting was held for interested parties seeking information about the elementary and science lab building project. Interested bidders attended a meeting and viewed the physical site before the bids are submitted and then awarded on August 6 by the SSISD school trustees. After the bids are awarded on August 6, the construction process should begin shortly there after. During the project parking around the campuses will be limited and congested. The ISD maintenance and transportation departments are working on designating additional parking for staff. As well, drop-off and pick up for elementary is being redesigned to avoid construction zones. Parents of children attending San Saba Elementary will receive a letter in the mail detailing the drop off and pick up procedures that will be used during the construction process. Questions, concerns and viewing of the renovated science classroom and special education classroom are certainly welcome.
