Dale L. Johanson

Dale L. Johanson passed from this life on July 13, 2012. He was born in Bluffton, Texas on November 18, 1922. He was the next to the youngest of eleven (11) children. Dale graduated from Cherokee High School in 1941. After public school he served his country in the United States Marine Corps in WWII. After the war, he attended Texas A&M University on a football scholarship and later transferred to Southwest Texas State Teachers College. He played football for the Bobcats and was named All-Lone Star Conference and Little All-American in both 1949 and 1950. He received both a Bachelors and Masters Degree from SWT. He was named to the Bobcat Athletics Hall of Honor. Dale married Gloria Lanell Burns in 1952. They had four (4) sons; Mac, Bob, and Shane. Dwayne, Shane’s twin died at birth. Dale was a lifetime educator. He taught and coached in Melvin, Texas; Fredericksburg, Texas; and Three Rivers, Texas. His teams won over 80 percent of the games that he coached. He was an active member of the Texas High School Coaches Association, and served the Association’s Board of Directors for 6 years. He was named to The Coastal Bend Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Dale coached the 1965 Three Rivers Bulldogs to the State Semi-Finals. He retired in 1988, having served the Three Rivers School District as a coach, teacher, Junior High Principal, Title Administrator, and as High School Principal. After retirement , he served on The Board of Trustees, for Three Rivers ISD. Dale was an active member of the Church of Christ in Three Rivers, serving as a member, Deacon, and Elder. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria Johanson; a son, Dwayne Johanson; his father and mother, John and Laura Magnolia Johanson; four sisters, Ella Baker, Zula Hallmark, Louetta Johanson, Lila Pearl Walters, and five brothers, Moore, Woodrow, Clyde, Wayne, and Douglas Johanson. Those left to cherish his memories are one brother, Harold (Maridale) Johanson; three sons, Mac (Cheryl), Robert Dale (Rebecca), and Shane (Doris) Johanson; four grandchildren, Joshua (Tina) Johanson, Jamie (Colby) Braune, Lauren and Tanner Johanson, as well as two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Lynae Johanson and Barrett Wayne Braune. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at 10 am at the Three Rivers Church of Christ. Charles Lynn Johanson, nephew and Minister of the San Pedro Church of Christ in San Antonio conducted the service. He was assisted by Kevin Mackey, Minister of Three Rivers Church of Christ and Joe Gary Wright, a former student and athlete gave the eulogy. Pall Bearers were Joe Gutieriez, Arlen Zamsow, Charles Meeks, David Franke, Scottie Duggger, and Gerald Teague, all former football players for Coach Johanson. Interment followed at the Three Rivers Cemetery under the direction of Galloway and Sons Funeral Home.
