69 Years Ago July 12, 1943E.E. Fagg, San Saba Mayor has been appointed chairman of the County War Price and Ration Board and has already entered upon his new duties. The appointment was made by District Director Mark McGee of Fort Worth .F.C. Thorpe, principal of the Freer schools, recently purchased the 320 acre place on Antelope Creek from J.C. Traweek near Northwest. Thorpe is the son of our former citizen, Arthur Thorpe, now of Brownwood, who was here Wednesday visiting friends and relatives.The Henry Behrens' enjoyed a happy reunion at their suburban home last week in honor of their son, Pfc. Arnold Behrens, who was home from Camp Howse on a furlough.Miss Betty Shoemake assumed her duties Saturday, July 10 as the record and file clerk for the Sub-Depot Signal Section at the Rattlesnake Bomber Base, Pyote, training base for the giant Flying Fortresses. Miss Shoe-make, is a 1943 graduate of San Saba High School. 80 Years AgoJuly 7, 1932The Texas Pecan Growers Association will meet in annual convention at Llano on July 12,13, and 14. Many people from our county are expecting to attend the convention. At the banquet in the evening E.E. Risien of San Saba will tell of his experiences in pecan breeding.T.J. Sparkman and T. M. Royall will conduct a meeting at Neal beginning July 8. K.E. McKneely of Cherokee will have charge of the song services. Miss Leila Pool has returned from Chicago where she spent her vacation.The Red Cross and the National government has consented to allot 10,000 pounds of government flour for distribution to the needy and destitute unemployed persons in San Saba County. There being no local active Red Cross organization here this flour will be distributed through the San Saba Chamber of Commerce and details have about been completed.100 Years AgoJuly 11, 1912The San Saba county Goat Club held it's annual festival and fourth of July celebration Thursday afternoon last week. The place of the meeting was on the banks of the beautiful San Saba River near the mouth of the China Creek.Edward Robbins has contracted to teach the Sloan school next year.Rev. J.W. Manny will speak at the courthouse in San Saba at night July 17, 18, and 19. His is the socialist nominee for representative in the legislature from this district and is an entertaining speaker.There will be three games of baseball Thursday, Friday and Saturday between the home team and the Brady team.The San Saba concert band will give an open air concert on the court lawn Friday night. The people of the town are cordially invited to encourage the band with their presence.
