30 Years AgoJuly 8, 1983

The Goldenaires of the San Saba Senior Center sang for the membership meeting of the Historical Society which was held at the museum. They always enjoy sharing their talents with others.The families of Sam, Joe and Will Gay, old settlers of San Saba County, had a family reunion at Sulphur Springs Camp on the Colorado River June 18 and 19. One hundred twenty descendance gathered on Saturday for the day and 90 were there on Sunday from Oklahoma, California, Michigan, and nineteen towns in Texas.Natalie Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Mark Scott, is one of three girls from San Saba who qualified to compete in the World Competition of the "Our Little Miss" contest. The contest is scheduled to be held in Las Vegas the second week in August. The staff of The San Saba News & Star would like to say a big THANKS to a very talented free lance photographer, Nancy (Weeze) Stewart. Nancy has contributed many pictures and sports stories throughout the past few weeks, and without her help, we could not have possibly covered the ballgames as we did. Thanks, Nancy, for your help.

50 Years Ago July 5, 1962

The Richland Springs Eye Witness will begin publication again next week after recovering from a fire which completely destroyed the building and equipment.The yard of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Barker and Nila Ruth has been selected as "Yard of the Month," according to Mrs. Curtis Johnson, San Saba Garden Club member.A total of 42 samples of screwworm have been confirmed in the county since June 25, according to County Agent Billy Kidd.Miss Patricia Renfro, Pecan Queen of San Saba County, will be crowned the 1962 State Pecan Queen during the 41st. Annual Convention of the Texas Pecan Growers. Jack M. Harkey was installed as president of the San Saba Chapter of the Lions Club. Frank Churchill will be vice-president, C.M. Cambell will be secretary, H.C. Gristy will serve as tail - twister and Billy Kidd has been named lion tamer.

100 Years AgoJuly 4, 1912

Chas. O. Rich of Cherokee has accepted a position as bookkeeper in the San Saba National Bank. Mr. Rice moved his family to town last week and they are at home in the Mrs. McConnell residence near the school building.Miss Pearl Graham is visiting her sister, Mrs. I. J. Hendricks and friends in San Saba. She has been living in Colorado City and teaching school the past two years. Candidates for the legislature and all the county and precinct candidates attended a rousing picnic and candidate rally at Cherokee Wednesday. Hon. E.B. House represented Gov. Colquitt, Hons. Matt R. Allison and J. K. Rector Jr. each spoke for themselves as candidates. Capt. R.C. Burleson is here from Ft. Sam Houston to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leigh Burleson. Capt. Burleson has been elected to a professorship in the West Point Military Academy and will report there for duty in August.
