The San Saba Ladies Golf Association held their Four Lady Pecan Classic Tournament on June 24, 2012 with all four San Saba teams competing in the money. Our own, Shelby Hardy, who is playing on the golf team at Sam Houston, competed for the first time in our ladies tournament and she was impressive along with her teammates, her mother, Betty Sue Hardy, her teammate Laura Reynolds, and Sandra Baskin. They scored an incredible 57 to capture First in the Championship Flight! The Sterner team, Dorothy Sterner, grandma, her two daughters, Debbie Lee and Kay Barclay, and her granddaughter, Jenny Oliver shot a scalding 67 to capture first in the Second Flight followed up by the team of Hattie Rogers, Jo Ann Snow, Flossie Woodward, and Anita Miles who actually tied with the team of Becky Hardin, Shirley Hardin, Janet Hoyt, and Sandee Hartley. The Rogers team won in a score card play off, winning on the first number one handicap hole where they parred and the Hardin team had a boogie. Doesn’t get any closer than that. Kay Barclay also won a closest to the pin prize. So it was a great day for the San Saba ladies! The president, Anita Miles, welcomed the guests and opened the tournament with prayer. Anita announced that the tournament was possible through the generosity of the City National Bank, our sponsors. The City National Bank has made this generous gesture for several years and the ladies are so appreciative, especially since the high price of gasoline has cut down on the number of players attending. This year we had 56 ladies (14 teams) from all over central Texas. The ladies were served donut holes, coffee, and juice as a welcoming gesture and awarded a baseball cap head cover as a favor. Then, our pro, Keith Harris, gave the format and rules and it was tee time. Keith is our anchor. He prepared the score cards and does all the scoring and awarding of the prizes, as well as, putting out ice water on the course and just helping in every way. We so appreciate Keith! We had three ladies, Jo Anne Hardy, Pat Ribb, and Nell McHorse who worked in the concession stand and greeted all the players and made them feel at home in San Saba serving them iced tea, peanut butter and crackers, and grapes. For lunch, we have our own private caterer, Betty Ann Johnson! The ladies from all over are familiar with Betty Ann and her food and it is a drawing card to our tournaments. This year she served king ranch chicken, green beans, salad, and the traditional pecan pies and was given a round of applause after the meal. Betty Ann is like a part of our ladies organization, always in a good humor and easy to work with. We are so small in number but because everybody does their part we always have a great tournament and this year was no exception. June 21, 2012 the ladies met for play day with the Chair for June, Jo Anne Hardy, calling for a game of Low Gross and Low Net. First Low Gross went to Anita Miles, who also scored the Low Net and won the Putt Pot, and second to Sandee Hartley. Low Net was awarded to Dorothy Sterner, as the same person cannot win both awards, and second to Jo Anne Hardy. Jo Anne and Dorothy also both chipped in to split the Chip In Pott. Janet Hoyt, Hattie Rogers, Jo Ann Snow, and Becky Hardin also were out playing and practicing for the tournament. Pat Ribb joined the ladies for lunch. These same few ladies put on the Pecan Classic Golf Tournament. So you can see we are small in numbers but with the cooperation and attitude of the ladies it is always a big success. We are still proud of our ladies organization, as many in our area have folded. We refuse to give up and continue to keep on ‘swinging!’
