San Saba Senior Center celebrates the lives of Terrific Twins

As little girls growing up, we all dream of our Prince Charming. What will his name be? Will he have blue eyes or green? Will he be short or tall? Blonde hair or brown? And then the subject of kids arises next, the ideal scenario most times is, "I want two kids, a boy and a girl, the boy to be born first."But as the norm, most little girls want the ultimate, which is twins.Well, this little girl, Vallie Autry Taff, grew up and fulfilled her dream, and on June 22, 1939, she gave birth to two beautiful baby girls, Pauline and Nadine Hibler.Let's get to know this Dynamic Duo a little better. What was the hardest thing about being a twin?Pauline - "There wasn't one, we were always glad to be twins."Nadine - "That someday I may have to live without her. That will be a sad day."Did people often mistake you for one another?Pauline - "More people would call me Nadine than her Pauline, and I would always tell her that she looked more like me than I did her.Nadine - " I couldn't tell you the number of times that it happened, but it was always ok with us.Pauline - "We had a teacher in high school that couldn't tell us apart, we would always correct her, which she didn't like.Do you dress alike?Pauline - "We dressed alike throughout high school and up until marriage, then on special occcasions. We enjoyed it. Nadine - "Always, our daddy wouldn't have it any other way.Which of you married first?Pauline - "We had a double wedding, "I had the first child and in a year Nadine had a child and then every other year we had one. I had two girls and one boy, she had three boys."Fondest twin memory?Pauline - "We were playing hide and go seek in the house, I saw my reflection in the mirror and ran and said, 'Nadine, you are out!' I thought it was her, but it was me!"Who got to drive first?Nadine - "My twin probably did, she was always the leader as we were growing up."Have you ever mistaken yourself for your sister in photos?Nadine - "Yes, when we were young, in some of our pictures it was hard to tell us apart."Are the two of you close?Nadine - You cannot believe how close we are. Sometimes it's scary.Throughout the years, could you actually feel your sister's pain, heartache, dread, joy, etc? Pauline - We have always known exactly how the other one felt about everything. We even had cancer at the same time, same place, 10 years ago.Nadine - "We have the same thoughts, we have felt each other's pain, and I will get a phone call from her and will have been thinking the same thing that she called me about."Describe how you feel about your twin.Pauline - "She is the dearest person in the world. Someone I would hate to be without. The closeness is unbelievable. I love her dearly.Nadine - "The day that I lose my twin sister a part of me will be gone, I love her so much."
