30 Years AgoJune 10, 1982

Police investigated a break-in at the Pecan Pool in Mill Pond Park where candy was taken from the concession stand and a pumps was stolen. The Western Auto store on the Courthouse square was broken into sometime Monday night or Tuesday morning. Several pieces of stereo equipment were stolen in the break-in.Eddie Sanderson caught a 64 pound catfish on a trotline from the San Saba River a couple of weeks ago.Mrs. C.M. Letbetter of the Cat Claw community killed a 5 foot 8 inch long rattler in her yard a few days ago. The snake had 11 rattlers (several had been broken off) and was 9 inches in circumference. The rattler weighed 7 and 3/4 pounds.The San Saba County Jail was recently renovated and remodeled to meet with the standards of the Texas Jail Commission. The commission made its first inspection of the jail in 1977 and found the county jail was "too far gone." They found 54 violations after an inspection in 1978. The County Commissioners approved remodeling the jailhouse. The next inspection in February this year found only 11 violations that were completed and the certification was given on May 26th. The jail has reached the safety, sanitary and security goals set for them by the state office.

The Old Settlers of San Saba County will gather here at the Cafetorium in the new junior high building Saturday, June 9, for their annual reunion, S.G. Boynton, president, has announced.Joe Galindo was winner of the $470 Wahoo Jackpot at the Corral Drive-In theatre here Saturday night, June 2, according to Alvie Smith, theatre manager.Joe Rogers, service officer for the Oscar N. Bolinger Post No. 36, American Legion in Richland Springs , reported that members of the organization had visited 75 veterans' graves and decorated each with the American Flag. These graves are located in the Richland Springs, Adams, Holt, McCarty, Varga Chapel, Locker and the Mesquite cemeteries.Alvie Smith, manager of the Palace and Corral Drive-In Theaters, received a Western Union telegram from the famous actor, Elvis Presley, of Hollywood, California last week, Presley was "especially pleased you have chosen my latest picture, 'Follow that Dream' to show during your Jubilee."Get your Blackleg Vaccine at Laird's Corner Dug Store.

80 Years AgoJune 5, 1932

Demonstrations of ranching methods were given at the ranches of J.H,. Burke and Buster Pool west of San Saba last Friday when 150 visitors attended the all day celebration.Mrs. Alma Ward Hamrick, who has been corresponding from San Saba to the Texas daily newspapers for the past three years, established headquarters in the Star office this week where she will make her headquarters.George Griffin has opened an ice cream plant near the ice factory and will make ice cream to be distributed throughout San Saba county and vicinity.The milk route through China Creek, Pecan Grove and communities between San Saba and Goldthwaite is covered by two trucks and collects about 2000 pounds of milk daily. This route is operated by Irby Johnson and Wood Low and Frank Herrin drive the trucks. The milk is sold to the Goldthwaite Creamery and nets the farmers on the route between $600 and $800 monthly.
