What are we to expect from the weather these next few months? The experts tell us conflicting theories. Some say a change to El Nino is coming back, others say that La Nina is and others still say that we are in the Neutral zone. So, as usual we are at the mercy of the weather of the Texas Hill Country where all the above can take place. I for one am praying for the El Nino to return. We need for the rains to be heavy and long in the San Saba area for our area lakes to resume or even survive. We all need to be better Stewards of the water we have. There is not an unlimited supply. We must mulch our trees and plants and all the vegetation in our landscape. When we water don’t overwater.Farmers MarketThis is the season for all types of fruits and veggies to be purchased at the local Farmers Markets. The one in Burnet located at the Westside of the square. If you are like my wife Patty who east and west type directions don’t mean anything then they are located in front of the Tea-Licious restaurant. Sarah Rowland and the “fish” man plus many others always present an array of “goodies” from homemade breads, jellies, home grown fruits and veggies. There are of course many others throughout the Texas Hill Country and I would appreciate you all emailing me with times and places of them. Mosquitoes Be GoneWith the heat and the earlier rains we will be having our annual onslaught of mosquitoes. This is an easy solution with Lemon Joy liquid soap available, water and a white ceramic dish as your weapons. Place the dish in an area away from where you are going to be enjoying the yard, deck, porch etc. Fill the dish with water, add a few drops (be generous) of Lemon Joy, swish the water around and make it soapy and then stand back. The little flying devils are attracted to it to drink and are they are dead within 15 feet of the dish. WARNING: Do not place the dish anywhere near where you are going to be.May Is Harvest TimeOh Boy, oh boy its that time again, when we get to refresh our taste buds with garden fresh tomatoes, herbs, onions, melons, etc. Even if I don’t grow all that I like to eat, which I don’t, I can still enjoy the season through friends and Farmer’s Markets. This is the month of planting caladium tubers; petunias, impatiens and begonias in well shaded or partially shaded areas. Also you can plant dahlias, cannas, and other Summer flowering bulbs. Continue to feed your roses every four (4) to six (6) weeks with Organic Rose food. It is already time to begin serious mulching practices. The practice of 3-4 inches of mulch around vegetation that you want to survive the heat that is upon us, being careful not to allow the mulch to come in contact with the plant or vegetation itself. If the mulch touches the plant then it can become a breeding ground for diseases due to the moisture we are attempting to keep in the soil for the benefit of the plants. I have been asked which mulch is best. They are all good it is just that we have so much Ashe Juniper, Cedar Trees, around the Hill Country it seems a shame not to have a double pleasure in taking out the Ashe Junipers and then using a chipper to make your own mulch. This mulch is as much a blessing in this form as it was a curse in the tree form and it is really beneficial to the soil and plants.Remember“Your harvest is going to depend to a degree on how fruitful the ground is that you are sowing” Andrew WomackTill Next Month!
