Local American Legion Post to meet on Memorial Day

The American Legion of San Saba will meet and hold a prayer breakfast at 7:00 a.m. at El Jalapeno Restaurant, next to the old L&L Hotel, on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28th. Rev. Tom Brand of San Saba will present the program.Brand was born in Dallas, Texas and was raised in the north Dallas area, where he attended R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton. After graduation, he first attended Southwestern Theological Baptist Seminary in Ft. Worth, graduating in 1991. He came to San Saba in 1992 and is the minister at The Father's House. Brand is married to the former Cynthia Sanderson of Burleson, Texas and to their union were born three children, Jennifer, Amy and Michael.Special guests to be recognized at the breakfast are three of the San Saba High School graduating students. Tanner W. Hawkins is this year's American Legion Scholarship recipient. Upon registration into college, he will receive a $1,000 scholarship on behalf of the veterans of Post No. 27. Tanner plans to attend Texas State Technical College in Waco and major in aircraft pilot training technology. He is ranked 17/36 with a 4.32 GPA and has participated in band, student council, Spanish Club, football, basketball and baseball. Some of his awards include Rotary Club Honor Student, President's Excellence Award and State trumpet soloist. Tanner has also obtained the rank of an Eagle Scout of the Boy Scouts of America.This year the Wiley B. Murray Post began to recognize those students who have chosen to enter the military after graduation. Each student was honored with the American Legion Medal for Patriotism and was recognized at the annual high school awards assembly on Tuesday, May 8th. The award recognizes those who have pledged to enter into the armed forces of the United States and offer their lives to defend the constitution and the country. These students are Daniel J. McKinney, II and Joshua Wright. Each will also receive a $25.00 gift at the breakfast.Daniel Joesph McKinney, II will be entering the United States Marine Corps. He has been active with San Saba High School athletics in football, power lifting and tennis. Daniel also participated in the local FFA.Joshua J. Wright will be entering the United States Air Force. He has been active with San Saba High School athletics in football, baseball, golf, and tennis. Joshua also has participated in the Boy Scouts of America and is a certified lifeguard.
