50 Years AgoMay 24, 1962A fire, which started in the ceiling of the City Drug Store at Richland Springs about 2 p.m. Monday, May 21, did some damage to the storage areas of the store due to water and smoke.Five San Saba county school girls have entered the ticket race to the San Saba County Rodeo for the honor of being the 1962 Rodeo Queen. Contestants include Faye Wharten, Jeannie Brown, Kay Millican, and Kathy Bagley all of San Saba; and Mary Ann Kollman of Cherokee.Approximately 340 San Saba County girls and boys have been organized into 23 ball teams here for the summer league play, according to R.G. (Pud) Watkins, president of the Summer Recreation Board.Lloyd Mosley of Rochelle delivered his lambs Monday off of the Jack Sloan ranch where he had wintered them.At the Corral Drive-In Theatre - King of the Twist- Chubby Checker in "Twist Around the Clock" and "Sergeants 3" - starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop.69 years agoMay 27, 1943Pres. Milt Harris of the Jaycees received a telegram from Earl Sellers Wednesday morning announcing that he has secured the appearance here for the Jaycee Rodeo, June 17-19, of Wiley McCray, the "Canadian Kid", as one of the outstanding comedy attractions for the big show.The six young ladies who received the highest number of nominating votes for Queen of the Jaycees Rodeo of 1943 are: Dorothy Sutton, Mrs. Newell Oliver, Walter Bob Smith, Jymie Sloan, Julia Beth Hillman and Jackie Spurlock.Miss Jonnie Hanna, age 10, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Hanna, was presented in a piano recital by her teacher, Mrs. Margaret Miller, Monday evening at the Miller Studio.The San Saba High School Senior commencement exercises will be held Monday evening, May 31, at the school gym-auditorium, beginning 8:30 p.m. Dr. Gordon G. Singleton, president of Mary Hardin-Baylor College, will deliver the commencement address.100 Years Ago May 23, 1912Gov. Colquitt will speak at the courthouse in San Saba in the afternoon on Friday, May 31. He will speak at Richland Springs Thursday night, May 30, Friday morning the Governor will be taken to Cherokee in a car and will address the people there at 10:00 and get back to San Saba for the speaking at 3:00. Here we see another advantage of the railroad.E.D. Brown, the popular and accommodating star mail driver on the San Saba-Cherokee route, has bought one of the Urquhart & Williams automobiles and is now carrying the mail in his car.W.H. Gibbons has leased his marble quarry to Mr. Swinney, manager of the San Saba Marble Works.The cotton gin at Harkeyville burned to the ground Monday night. The gin belonged to R.S. Crain. The origin of the fire was upstairs and there is no doubt but that it was the work of an incendiary.
