James Ward Harkey and Nellie Jane Harkey

James Ward Harkey, 93, of Coleman, died Monday, May 14, 2012 at Coleman County Medical Center.Funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 16 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial followed in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.James Ward Harkey was born March 5, 1919 in Dennison, Texas, the son of Ed Harkey and Carrie Simmons Harkey. He grew up and attended school in San Saba. On December 2, 1939 he married Jane Cox in San Saba. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operations and was awarded the Purple Heart as well as numerous other Awards. Following the war, he and his wife lived in Coleman where they raised their children. They later moved to Abilene where he worked for the City of Abilene for 17 years.In 1972 they moved to Coleman County where Ward worked on the Hudson Ranch at Novice. He was a cowboy and a heavy equipment operator. In later years, they moved to Coleman and were faithful members of North Coleman Baptist Church.Survivors include his wife, Jane Harkey of Coleman; two sons, Donald E. Harkey and wife Sandra of Abilene, Terry Harkey and wife Carolyn of Monahans; 11 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Zackery Wayne Rankin; his daughter, Betty Jo Morganweck and a sister, Essie Mae McNurlin.Memorials may be made to North Coleman Baptist Church Building Fund, 312 Church Street, Coleman, Texas 76834.Pallbearers were Cody Rankin, Blake Heflin, Blane Heflin, Bond Helflin, Jeffery Harkey, Benji Harkey, Chase Brown, Christopher Reeves and Stephen Rineheart.Visitation was held at Stevens Funeral Home the morning of the service.

Mrs. Jane Harkey, age 93, of Coleman, died Saturday, May 19, 2012 at Holiday Hill Nursing Home. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 20 in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Moore officiating. Burial followed in the Coleman City Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.She was born Nellie Jane Cox on December 21, 1918 in Winters, Texas, a daughter of Porter Cox and Nellie Spence Cox. She grew up in Winters and graduated from high school there. She attended business college in Abilene. On December 2, 1939 she married James Ward Harkey in San Saba and he preceded her in death on May 14, 2012. After their marriage, Jane and Ward lived in Coleman and moved to Abilene in 1972. While living in Abilene, Jane was a clerk for Gibson's. They returned to Coleman County in 1989 and lived on the Hudson Ranch and later moved to Coleman and finally to Holiday Hill Nursing Home, three years ago. She was a devoted member of North Coleman Baptist Church.Survivors include her two sons, Donald E. Harkey and wife Sandra of Abilene, Terry Harkey and wife Carolyn of Monahans; 10 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband, James on Monday, May 14, her daughter, Betty Jo Morganweck, a great-grandson, Zackery Wayne Rankin; four brothers, Clarence Cox, Elmer Cox, Pete Cox and Jake Cox.Memorials may be made to North Coleman Baptist Church Building Fund, 312 Church Street, Coleman, Texas 76834.
