The 2nd Annual Blue Bell/Bluegrass Classic Car Show and Festival, scheduled in Llano on Memorial Day Weekend, is shaping up to be just what the doctor ordered for families seeking a "Staycation" weekend. The festival has something for every member of the family with activities planned from Friday evening, May 25th till Monday afternoon, May 28th. Friday evening kicks off the weekend long event with the opening of the Thrills of America carnival which will be set up downtown adjacent to the Red Top Jail. Friday night will be "Family Night" featuring discounted tickets for rides and the midway. The entire family will enjoy the Taste of Llano which will be held at the American Legion Hall beginning at 6 p.m. Local restaurants and wineries will be sampling some of their marquee items. Bluegrass music and a jam session is planned for the Legion Hall stage with locals and out of towners alike work their way through the feast. The Taste of Llano is being made possible thanks to the Llano Chamber of Commerce.Downtown Llano, "On the Square," will be the place to be Saturday all day. The Highland Lakes Honor Guard will be posting the colors, there will be a moment of silence and the playing of taps at 8:30 a.m. honoring those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Vendors will open their booths to the public at 9:00 a.m. which will also be the time the first Bluegrass Band hits the main stage. The Bee Creek Boys from Austin will be followed by The Flying Balalaikia Brothers, The Geoff Union Band with Billy Brite to end the morning's entertainment. At one o'clock The Piney Grove Ramblers take the stage and kick off an incredible afternoon of music which will include The Sieker Band featuring banjo pick'n champion Rolf Sieker, Karen Abrahams featuring Steve Pruitt national champion flat guitar picker, The Alan Munde Trio, and last but not least Air Cargo. Bluegrass musicians from all over will be holding an "Open Jam" throughout the day next to the Central Texas Bluegrass Association booth. And did we mention, as long as the supply lasts there will be FREE Blue Bell Ice Cream straight from the Blue Bell truck all day Saturday.All the bands are made possible thanks to The Badu House which will host an "Open Jam" and after party from 7:00 p.m. till 11:00 p.m. with everyone invited to enjoy Llano's most laid back and comfortable venue.While the music is going on the classic cars will roll into town and participate in a "Poker Run" from 11:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. then they will be getting ready for an old fashioned cruise through town starting at 7:00 p.m. and running until 8:00 p.m. The cruise is made possible thanks to T Paint & Body. The cruise will have two starting points with one group headed by T Paint & Body beginning at the Courthouse Square and the second group headed by Horace Oestreich starting from Inman's Kitchen, Catering and BBQ. All cars participating in the cruise will stop at Llano's newest business, O'Reilly Auto Parts and check in with the KITY radio remote crew to pick up their card for a goody bag which they will receive at The Badu House during the after party. The carnival will be open throughout the day and night for the kids.Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. a special invitation has gone out to all local churches and their members to come together as one to recite "The Lord's Prayer" and sing "Amazing Grace" before heading to their chosen church of worship. The Blue Skyz Gospel Group will be performing from 9:00 a.m. till 10:00 a.m. and all vendors will be open for business. Gospel music will be featured until 4:00 p.m. Special guests, State of Grace will be performing from 2:00 p.m. till 3:00 p.m.All classic cars will be on display from 11:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. around the square for the classic car show judging. First and Second custom made trophies in each class will be awarded the winners between 1:30 p.m and 2:00 p.m. Trophies will also be awarded for Best in Show, People's Choice and Rat Rod. The trophies have been made possible and will be presented by Horace Oestreich and wife Myrtle of Inman's Kitchen, Catering and BBQ.Monday at 1:00 p.m. on the Llano County Courthouse Grounds there will be a full Military Memorial Ceremony presented by The Highland Lakes Honor Guard and The Llano American Legion Post #370. The organizing committee at the time of this writing was still seeking a military band from either Fort Hood or Fort Sam Houston to perform.The festival is being produced by Promote Llano, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting tourism and business in the community.
