San Saba City Council holds regular meeting May 8th

A regular session of the San Saba City Council was held Tuesday, May 8th at the Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present with alderman Charles Peeler absent. Mayor Jordan gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.Luis Rios was announced as the Employee of the Month. The Supervisor of the Quarter Award was given to Juan Montoya, who has been employed at the recycling plant for four years and was recently promoted to supervisor. Both employees' names will be added to plaques, will receive a day off with pay and receive a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant.The following Consent Agenda Items were approved: A. Minutes from the April 10th & 13th Council Meetings. B. Payment of bills presented to Council. C. Resolution No. 1012-13 waiving noise ordinance at 307 W. Commerce on June 2nd. D. Resolution No. 2012-14 waiving noise ordinance at the pavilion in Risien Park on June9th. E. Resolution No. 2012-15 waiving noise ordinance at the gazebo in Mill Pond Park on May 12th. F. Resolution No. 2012-16 waiving noise at the gazebo in Mill Pond Park on June 9th. G. Appointed Debbie Shahan to the Keep San Saba Beautiful Commission replacing Phillice Magallanes for a term ending January 2013. Action was taken on the following items: a. Ordinance No. 2012-15 closing a portion of Fourth Street on June 2, 2012. b. Set the date of May 18th at 12:00 noon to canvass the election. c. Adopted the Budget Calendar for the 2012-13 Fiscal Year.Stan Weik, City Manager, reported on the LCRA dedication of the San Saba Nature Park ; a Bird Banding at the Nature Park was well attended; the heavy rain and wind brought some tree limbs down and caused street flooding; update on the construction of the new fire station; started the process of removal and salvaging things at the building that was vacated by Downtown Video the building will then be demolished; the construction of the wine cellar is progressing; visitors attending recent events in the city commented favorably on the new downtown decor.Larry Alderson, Electric Department Supervisor, reported storm related outages and they are trimming trees from electric lines.Suzie Jimenez, Keep San Saba Beautiful Director, reported that approximately 100 volunteers helped with the Mill Pond Cleanup; LCRA supplied the food and SSVFD members cleaned Mill Pond.Tony Guidroz, Tourism/Economic Development Director, gave a report on marketing; approximately 330 people attended the first Concert at Risien Park; update on grant for improve-ments at the Civic Center; Gordon Collier will perform at Risien Park on May 12th; the Street Dance on the Square will be May 26th; obtaining quotes for new playground equipment at Mill Pond Park.Scott Glaze, Public Works Department Director, gave a report on the repairs needed to the water wheel at Mill Pond and showed a video of the following: new concrete dance floor at Risien Park; Golf Course cleanup after the storm; new banners being installed downtown; the system used to water flowers in the new flower pots downtown; improvements on grounds at Community Center; a huge snapping turtle found on the south end of Mill Pond; the dredged “stuff” at the waste water plant will be put to good use.Mayor Jordan adjourned the meeting.
