San Saba ISD participated in a program Monday, May 14 presented by the San Saba Scottish Rite Club. This event provided staff and parents with an opportunity to connect with certified dyslexia trainers and therapists from Austin. Many times, it is very hard to recognize the signs of dyslexia and school teachers and staff often do not always feel equipped to make that call that a student does exhibit dyslexic tendencies. The Scottish Rite Dyslexia Center of Austin was founded in 1989, and was established to provide dyslexia therapy for children in grades 2-5. In 2001, the center established an additional program to provided area classroom teachers with the training required to become Certified Academic Language Therapists through the Academic Language Therapy Association. What is Dyslexia? Dyslexia is a type of reading/learning disability, it is neurological in origin and can be hereditary. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and poor spelling, typically the result is a deficit in the ability to work with the individual sounds of language and the effects can be mitigated through early and intensive intervention. SSISD is appreciative of the opportunity provided by the Scottish Rite Club of San Saba in bringing this opportunity and outreach to our community.
