AgriLife Extension Quail Appreciation Day set for May 10th in Goldthwaite

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Mills County will conduct at Quail Appreciation Day from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. May 10 in the Mills County State Bank Community Room in Goldthwaite. “Bobwhite quail are an important part of our region’s wildlife resource, but unfortunately, like the rest of the south, we’re seeing fewer and fewer wild birds these days,” said Tom Guthrie, AgriLife Extension agent in Mills County. “The purpose of this program is not only to appreciate our remaining wild birds, but also to learn ways to possibly increase our numbers in the future.”The day’s topics will include: Getting to Know Quail, Scoring Habitat, Habitat Evaluation, Assessing Quail Nesting Cover, Intensive Quail Management, Bobwhite Brigade and Research Updates. Speakers will include: Dr. Dale Rollins, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist, San Angelo; Robert Perez, Texas Parks and Wildlife state quail biologist, Austin; Mike Miller, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologist, Stephenville; Ricky Linex, U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service biologist, Weatherford; Melissa Sturdivant, Natural Resources Conservation Service soil conservationist, Goldthwaite and Danny Long, AgriLife Extension agent emeritus in Mills County. Three Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units will be offered to individuals with a private pesticide applicator license. Individual cost for the program is $20 and includes lunch.
