Plans are underway for the Arts and Crafts Fair which will be held on Saturday, June 19 in conjunction with the Cow Camp Cookoff and the Old Fiddlers Contest during the 4th Annual San Saba PRCA Rodeo.Thomas Bowden has some "strange" items for sale over KBAL's Trading Post. Tuesday it was announced he had a "paper toilet" for sale. Later it was realized it was a "paper target."We have some Bike-A-Thon entry forms/sponsors list at The News office. Pick one up and start securing sponsors. If you collect $25 or more you get a T-shirt. Five children are born every day with Cystic Fibrosis and 3 people die from it every day.The following officer's were elected for the San Saba County Pecan Growers Association at their annual field day and business meeting held on May 4th. President, Riley Harkey; Vice-President, Jim Gage; Secretary-Treasurer, Billy Kidd; new directors, John Jones, Desmond Doyle and Ezra Cook; hold-over directors, Dennis Hardman and Gordon Lee Oliver.

70 Years AgoMay 7, 1942

A carrier pigeon, found by L.L. Barefoot of near Neal, Monday, was before the Grand Jury at San Saba Tuesday. District Attorney Carlos Ashley notified the FBI of the code letters on aluminum bands on the legs of the pigeon.Work has started on the three room cottage for Mrs. Elizabeth Alexander, which is being built on the lot she recently purchased from Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Dean near Rogan Field. Mrs. Alexander, a former teacher in the county is employed in the City National Bank here.Tires, retreads and tubes issued by the San Saba County Rationing Board between April 15 and April 30, 1942 included: 20, San Saba; 3, Bend; 6, Cherokee; 1, Mercury; 12, Richland Springs.Washington - The navy announced today the loss of 5486 dead and missing in the first four months of world-wide naval warfare.Offices of the Lower Colorado River Authority here are being moved from the back of the San Saba National Bank building to the Hotel San Saba building. Bob Smith of Lampasas has been assisting in the management of the local offices since the death of A. B. Puckett, who was fatally injured in the services of the company about three weeks ago.

100 Years AgoMay 2, 1912

San Saba county will soon have a Superintendent of Public Instruction - that will be great help to the county and schools in particular.Gus and George Woods were down from the Woods ranch 18 miles up the river Monday. They took out lumber for the purpose of building larger barn facilities on the ranch.The Harmony Ridge public school, of which Miss Nellie Cannon has taught a successful term, will close Friday, the 10th, after which on the night following will be rendered a very interesting "up-to-date" concert. Everyone is invited to be present at the exercise.The band boys are coming to life and San Saba is to have a good band. The boys met Monday night and organized by electing W.M. Johnson, president; W.D. Cowan, secretary; R.G. Halden, treasurer.Miss Nora Walker, candidate for county superintendent, attended the closing exercise of Miss Beulah Mae Walker's school at Crescent, Friday night.
