Thursday, April 12, 2012 • Posted April 12, 2012

A Luminaria Ceremony for cancer survivors (anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer) and in memory of those lost to the disease will take place Friday, April 13th at 9:00 p.m. at the 2012 San Saba County Relay for Life. Bags containing lit candles will be placed around Risien Park, while participants walk a lap by the light of hundreds of candles. Anyone wishing to purchase luminaries for a loved one may pick up a form at Commercial National Bank or purchase one at the event.Relay For Life is an overnight event increasing cancer awareness while raising much needed funds for the American Cancer Society's programs and services for the local community. Teams composed of people from the local schools, businesses, families and friends have been raising funds for the past few months. At the Relay, team members take turns waling around the track, relay-style. Participants camp-out and enjoy music, entertainment and food while building team spirit to help in the ongoing fight against cancer. This is an awesome event with an outstanding Relay for Life Committee who have worked extremely hard to make this an event to remember and teams have been busy raising funds to fight back cancer. On behalf of the RFL committee and teams, the Event Chair - Michele Whitley, would like to invite and encourage each of you to come join us at Risien Park for the Opening Ceremony at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Luminaria Ceremony at 9:00 and enjoy a meal of your choice - fried fish plate, beef or chicken shish kabobs, sausage wraps, or some delicious homemade desserts. The community is a vital part of helping us reach our goal, so come join us as we celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer with games and music for all ages. Come out and walk a lap or more in memory or honor of a family member or friend that has had those dreaded words, "You have cancer," said to them. We will be there all night, so join us anytime. For more information call, Michele Whitley at 325-372-7588 or fmwhitley@yahoo.com.
