The San Saba Garden Club members are enjoying many beautiful displays of greening and flowering plants this spring due to the blessings of rain the past few months! The Yard of the Month Award for April goes to the home of Mrs. Dixie Hewitt of 1107 W. Commerce St. Mrs. Hewitt shared this history of her yard's progression the last eight years:"The house was built around 1911 by the Fagg family and it stayed in the family until I purchased it in 2004. As none of the family had lived in the house in years, with only occasional renters, the only plants alive were the pecan trees and the hackberry trees. The property takes in half a block, and there was a lot of work to be done.I started with the yard first, before doing anything to the house, as I wanted to get the trees and plants established as quickly as possible. The soil had to be amended with compost and top soil and loads of cardboard put down to deter weeds. I planted the grass, shrubs, more trees, and other plants such as daylilies, iris and roses. There are Texas natives I brought to town from the ranch, and others such as lantanas, salvias and Texas Ash trees. 99% of the 60 or so roses are antique roses and some of these have never been trimmed, so have gotten huge. Not all of the plants were purchased, as many have been shared with me by friends. The vines on the front porch and in back on the west side of the house are cross vie, and the fruit trees are, peaches, plums, pear, apricot and figs.My daughter and I plant a large garden in the back yard each year and have raised herb beds and a nice asparagus bed which we have spent several years establishing. I experience joy in gathering the fresh fruits and vegetables, hearing bird songs and watching the birds in the shrubs and shade trees, seeing the butterflies fluttering around the flowers. Fortunately, this year, we have had a wet spring; thus, the plants have produced extraordinary blooms.”
