Darrin Barker, a junior at San Saba High School, has been chosen to attend the American Legion Boys State program in Austin this summer. Barker is being sponsored by the American Legion Post #27 and the local chapter of the Lions Club.Congressman Marvin Leath will speak to the Property Owners Association on Thursday, April 15 at the Bar-B-Que Shack at 7 p.m.The Texas Tractor Pullers Association recently announced the point champions for 1981 and once again, Ruben Almaguer was among the winners. Almaguer won the 7000 pound class with his John Deer Super Stock. He has won this award four out of the last five years. Congratulations, Ruben.The Dewayne Lindseys of Rankin came down Thursday to gather and shear the ewe lambs they are pasturing with Thomas Sloan. They made a good gather but rain has held them from shearing.Marityn Brister of Temple recently returned to Texas following a three-month trip to Australia. A senior student of Texas A&M University of Medicine, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Brister of Bend and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.F. Barefoot also of Bend and Mr. and Mrs, G.H. Brister of San Saba.

Cadet Arnold A. Hayes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Hayes of Rt. 1, San Saba, was recently appointed to the position of flight leader with cadet rank of first lieutenant.The Journalism Classes of 49-50, 50-51, 51-52 have appropriated the money for an electric scoreboard to be installed at Rogan Field in August.Minnie Kelly, who operates a 663 acre ranch, three miles south of San Saba, has seeded 50 acres of burnt over cedar pature land, and 15 acres of cutivated land to grass.Local deer hunters will be glad to know that deer in San Saba County are not dying from the long extended drought, Blackie Bowers, state game warden, stated that although deer are suffering from the long dry spell, very few have been found dead on ranches in this county.This section of the world will contain many of the green uniformed 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers during the forepart of the week and for later on, with Exercise Longhorn getting underway last Tuesday and will last 17 days. 100 Years AgoMarch 28, 1912
J.F. Petsick now one of the progressive farmers of the McMillin section, was in town Monday and enrolled as one of the News' 2000 readers for 1912. Mr. Petsick bought the Austin Choat farm and came here from Mills County. He is well pleased with the look out for a good crop this year. A deal was closed Tuesday by which two of the five lumber yards in San Saba sold their holdings to the other three. The yards of Hardin & Jones and the Citizens Lumber Co., were purchased jointly by the San Saba Lumber Co., the W.R. Vickrey Lumber and (the third was omitted from the news report).A San Saba boy made the best individual record in the stock grading contest at the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show last weeks. The boy was R.S. Miller, a son of Sheriff and Mrs. Miller. Dick is a second year student in the A&M College.H.F. Brown has gone to Mt. Vernon, Franklin county, to do stone work on the new court house which is being build there. Mr. Shaddy, who superintended the work in the construction of the San Saba courthouse is superintending this one and has sent for some of the San Saba men to come and help him.
