Thursday, March 22, 2012 • Posted March 22, 2012

Eventide's Activity Director, Jennifer Saiz, recently entered a poetry contest about Texas sponsored by The United Daughters of the Confederacy. She won first place in her age division.Jennifer and the late Mary Stewart, a resident of our home, shared the love of poetry. Mary was an established, published poet and we would like to share Jennifer's poem in honor of Mary.Texas PrideCowboy boots, belt buckles, rifles, the norm, and there is nothing like a West Texas storm!Rolling hills, rivers, lakes, streams and ponds, where snakes and rabbit or squirrel stew is not uncommon.Beautiful scenery for all to see, bluebonnets, armadillos, coons, and wild hogs, we have plenty! And who can explain that Texas weather? Send the kids to school in shorts, they come home in a sweater!Where camouflage is regular attire and you "ain't seen nothin'" till a Texas fire!Old men still meet to gossip at the local cafe and cover with homemade blankets made of crochet.Front porch gatherings and bird dogs called Sam...fried bacon and eggs on the stove and a bottle fed lamb.Roosters still crow at the crack of dawn and it's not unusual to see in your front yard, a drinking fawn.Up high in the sky, huge eagle's nests and that Texas heat will put your body to the test!Barbeques, camp outs and Texas Rangers, family reunions, tourists, we know no strangers.Ranches and farmhouses galore, plenty of country and caves to explore.Rodeos, stock shows, can't forget Big Bend, we consider Tommy Lee Jones a "personal" friend.Lonesome Dove, yes, our movie of choice and country music we're all happy to voice.Cowboy hats that fit as "tight as a glove" and we are all neighbors when push comes to shove. There may very well be plenty of other good states around, but for us, we're so proud to live in a great Texas town!Jennifer Saiz
