San Saba High School Baseball has successful spring break
Thursday, March 22, 2012 • Posted March 22, 2012

Back on Thursday, March 8, the Armadillo baseball program was opening spring break by hosting the Mill Pond Classic. Games were played at 11:00, 1:00, 3:00 and 5:00. The eleven o’clock game was a JV game between Goldthwaite and San Saba. Goldthwaite started the scoring with three in the first inning, three more in the second, and four more over the next several innings. The Dillos were slow to score at first, and then they scored four runs in the third, and five more in the fourth. The 1:45 time limit ended the game with San Saba one run short. The final score was Goldthwaite 10 – San Saba 9.The five o’clock game featured our Armadillos against the Goldthwaite Eagles on a varsity level. With the temperature much lower than it was earlier that day, scoring runs was much harder to come by. The Eagles pushed one across in the second inning, but the Dillos responded by scoring one in the third and two more in the fourth. Kelan Verette had a key insurance RBI in the fifth. Ryan Guidroz pitched well to keep Goldthwaite to the one and only run by striking out 7 batters along the way. San Saba held on to win by the score of 4 – 1. The seven o’clock game was supposed to be the Wall Hawks against San Saba. However, moisture was coming down as well as the temperature and the umpires decided safety would be an issue, so they postponed. More needed rain fell overnight, but it was so much that home plate and third base were now under water. So the rest of the Mill Pond Classic was washed out for this year.On Tuesday, March 13, we traveled up the road to Early for our second district game of the season. The JV played first and got in a hole that they could not get out of from the first inning on. Late in the game, Jordan Watson had a two run double for the only Dillo runs this time. The final score was Early 15 – San Saba 2.The varsity game that followed was much the opposite and very exciting to the bitter end. In the first inning, Tanner Weyerts had a hard RBI double down the right field line that scored Ryan Pannell and gave the Dillos an opening lead 1-0. Two more runs in the third inning, and one more run knocked in by Luke Cox in the fourth would push the Armadillo lead out to 4-0. Ryan Guidroz was very sharp in his 3 and 2/3 innings on the mound. He struck out seven batters and had much control of the game until the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, the Longhorn shortstop had a hard hit into the right-center field gap, which plated three runs. Eventually the batter would score as well to tie the game at 4 all.In the top of the fifth, Issac Jimenez drew a leadoff walk. A sacrifice bunt moved him to second and a wild pitch got him to third. Clayton Perry then hit a deep fly ball to plate Jimenez that proved to be the winning run. In the next three innings, Ryan Pannell was clutch from the mound as he held the Longhorns in check and struck out eight batters along the way. San Saba won 5-4 and moved to 2-0 in district. This past Friday, March 16, we hosted a five o’clock varsity game against the Dublin Lions. After a scoreless first inning, the San Saba bats came to life as they scored 10 runs in the second inning. Clayton Perry got a hit both times he was up in that inning. He would eventually score three times in the game as well. Ryan Pannell had a triple and a double on the day as Kelan Verette and JT Mathis both had 2 RBI’s each. The Dillos combined for 11 hits and 13 runs.Zack Davis took the mound for the Armadillos and took care of the Dublin batters in all five innings. He walked two batters, hit another, and two got on by fielder’s choice as he struck out nine. All of this equaled to a no-hitter! Way to go Zack! Not bad for number three in the pitching rotation. San Saba won the game 13-0 and moved to 3-0 in district play, 10-2 for the year, and will have faced Bangs who is 3-0 as well on Monday, March 19. The report on this game will be in the next issue. Our next games to attend will be Friday, March 23, at Hamilton at 5:00 (due to lights) and not again until Thursday (due to academic testing), March 29, here against Coleman JV at 4:30, varsity at 7:00 and Friday, March 30, and here against Hico JV at 4:30, varsity at 7:00. We thank everyone for his or her involvement and support and we look forward to seeing you guys at the ballpark. Go Dillos!
