The San Saba River Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas celebrated Texas Honor Days in March with a program entitled "Getting to Know Our Heroes" given by Mr. Thomas Bowden of San Saba. Opening the program by wishing an early happy Texas Independence Day to the members and visitors, Bowden discussed the timeline and events leading to the road to Texas Independence. He related some of the twists, turns, and surprises befalling our heroes and their opponents during this period in Texas history. Other honor days this month include Alamo Heroes Day on March 6, held annually at the Alamo honoring the patriots who died there and Goliad Heroes Day on March 27 remembering the 320 Texan prisoners who were executed after being promised fair treatment upon their surrender to Santa Anna. After the monthly business meeting, the winners of the I Love Texas Poetry Contest, sponsored by the chapter in February, were awarded their prizes and ribbons. Winning poems included: "Texas Pride" written by Jennifer Saiz, Adult Division; "Ev'thang Texas written by Analyn Bohensky, Division 2 and "Big ol' Texas" written by Katelyn Bohensky, Division 1. These winning poems may be viewed on the chapter website at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txssrdrt/ .
