Small Schools have their advantages
Thursday, March 15, 2012 • Posted March 15, 2012

Richland Springs may be a small Class A school, but it has a 5 AAAAA attitude. “Bigger is better” does not necessarily apply to small schools. In a small community like Richland Springs, the school is the nucleus of the community. The small size of the school encourages interaction between the staff and students. There is a strong working relationship among the school staff. Parents, students, teachers, administrators, and school board members know each other well. Relationships between administrators and staff tend to be more personal and informal, creating a good learning environment. Small schools are manageable.Anyone with two legs and a heartbeat can be involved in a small school. Students do not have to be in the elite class to participate in cheerleading or athletics or academic events. Morale is higher in small schools as everyone must participate in order to achieve success. Students working together in a small school form a bond like no other. When students participate they are involved, they must rely on each other, and they have fewer disciplinary problems. Discipline in not a problem at Richland Springs, and more time can be spent on learning. All students are going to be at school for seven and one half hours every day. Students are encouraged by everyone to do their best every day. “If you’re going to be a bear, might as well be a grizzly.”Student-teacher ratios are lower at Richland Springs than in big schools. Teachers get to know their students and their individual needs. Teachers can address students’ individual needs more effectively in the small school environment. The student is the winner. Student success is evident in academics and athletics. As you can see, I am an advocate for small schools. Please read these letters from our eighth grade students to gain their insight into the small school environment at Richland Springs. Why I Love Richland Springs SchoolBy Antonia ValdezThere have been so many schools that I went to. The one that I love most is Richland Springs. I love it because it’s small and you get more learning by your teachers, and you can play more sports. There would be no other school that I would go to.It’s smaller than the other schools that I ever went to. There are only nine people in my class and I love it because you can be friends with everyone in your class. The people here are what keep you together. Everyone is there to help you if you have a problem. The teachers here help you more than any where else. If you are down in a class you have the teachers here to help you get caught up. If I need help at lunch the teachers will eat their food fast to help. The teachers never leave a kid behind. The sports here are great you can be on the team if you want. We don’t have try outs to see if people stay on the team or if you’re cut. You can play any sports that you want. Everyone that wants to play a sport they can be on the team. Why I love Richland Springs SchoolBy Brittany BushI love Richland Springs School, because there are a lot of nice kids here. Everyone is like family in this school. I have been going to school here since I was in kindergarten and everyone in my class are like my brothers and sisters. We have a very good football team and we have won state 2 times in a row. Richland Springs School has very nice and AWESOME teachers here. The breakfast and Lunch is very good and healthy for you. I love being in a small school, because everyone knows everyone. The people in this town are very nice and helpful.Richland Springs has one of the best football teams ever. The coaches here are the best and are very good at coaching and care a lot about every kid in this school. Mr. Fowler is a very good principle except we can’t chew gum in school. If we could chew gum he would be the best ever. Why I like Richland Springs SchoolBy Bryan SalinasThe reason why I like Richland Springs School is because this is where true champions come and work hard in school and out to prove their talent. Being a champion is more than knowing the game; it’s knowing what you are doing. Coming to this school shows you how to be an all around champion with everything you do. We are the best there is, the best there was, and the best there will ever be. We are 5 time state champions, two that are back-to-back. Winners come here, Champions leave here! Why I Love Richland SpringsBy Jacob ColemanOne of the biggest reasons I love Richland Springs is because it is so small. The classes don’t have as many kids in it because it is a six man school. I feel a lot better here because I have more one on one time with the teachers here at school. Since I have been here I have done a lot better in school because the teachers help you so much. The football is great here. To tell you the truth I like six man football better than eleven man football. On a six man football team it’s all about speed. Our coaches push us harder than any eleven man football coach. We have Five State Championships, and it's not because our coaches or the people that play on the team, its because God Is Great. Why I like Richland Springs SchoolBy Lexus NealI love Richland Springs School because, it is the best school I have ever been to I mean the best. They help you when you need help. You can talk to the teachers about anything, even if it is your personal stuff. Another reason is that it is a very small school. We have the best football team in the state. You will meet the best people here you can ever meet and you make the best friends here. We have a great way of teaching education. You know everybody here. This is why I Love Richland Springs School!!!!!

Why I like Richland Springs SchoolBy Nash MooreI like Richland Springs School because it is small. All of the teachers are nice. The teachers work hard to help you. If you do good you get a prize. Coach Smith knows everything about history. If you need help about history Coach Smith can help you. You know everybody in the school. The school is small so you can walk to all of your classes fast. We have AG, a lot of schools don’t have AG. If you need help on some thing the teachers always have time to help you, because it is a small school. Why I love Richland Springs School By Nathan AllenI love Richland Springs School because it is the best school ever. I love our school because the teachers are amazing, the food is delicious, and the building is amazing. The teachers are the best and the smartest. They are really helpful when it comes to helping with work and teaching what to do. The food is the most delicious and scrumptious in the entire United States. It is healthy and nutritious and always served with smiles. The building is very amazing and incredibly well heated and cooled. The Richland Springs School is the only school that I would ever want to go to. Why I love Richland Springs SchoolBy Elizabeth AvilaI love Richland Springs School because its small. You have the opportunity to play sports. In big schools you have to try out, and you might or might not make the team, but in Richland you can play any sport you want. You might not be the best at it, but at least you have the chance to try it. You also have the opportunity to have more one-on-one time with teachers to help you with your work. I also love Richland Springs School because its full of good people, the principal, the teachers, the faculty, and the students. If you need any help, they will help you, because they are good people. In big schools you hardly know most of the people there but in a small school like Richland Springs, the people are close.
