The Pierian Study Club met for their monthly meeting at the San Saba High School Cafetorium on March 8th for the UIL One Act Play Performance by local high school students. Mrs. Kathleen Hawkins, President, called the meeting to order, and then welcomed club members, Mrs. Elizabeth Chambers, SSHS English teacher and drama coach, along with her students. The brief business meeting included Kay Nettleship, Projects Chairman, reporting that a thank-you note expressing grateful thoughts had been received from The Dove Project for the club’s contribution of toiletries and other items for the facility last month. Gail Bruner, Nominating Committee Chair, then presented the slate of officers for 2012-2013. They included President - Anita Miles, First Vice President- Sharon Clawson, Second Vice President - Loy Nell Behrens, Recording Secretary - Sandy Smith, Corresponding Secretary-Cherry Kay Lange , Treasurer -Louise Williams, Historian/ Librarian - Gail Bruner, Reporter- Rebecca Whitley, Parliamentarian -Kathleen Hawkins, and Nominating Committee Chairman- Patty Shaw. All nominees were voted in unanimously.Next, Kay Nettleship, proud grandmother of one of the play’s actresses, introduced Mrs. Chambers and the cast by referring members to the program handout given to each club member at the door. All present then enjoyed the touching performance called “ The Cover of Life”, set in rural Louisiana in 1943, portraying a time in the lives of several young brides, living together while their husbands are off to fight in the war. Enter the arrogant city journalist on her first cover story job coming to interview them, soon becoming akin in the personal struggle for self worth as maturing young women in a man’s world. Students participating in the cast and crew included Paige Chambers, Allison Nettleship, Courtney Pryor, Jenna Sloan, Allison Christian, Hailey Osbourn, Connor Arrington, Ashia Chambers, Jacey Martinez, Ashton Krueger, Nathan Amstead, and Cory Rixse.The One Act Play Cast and Crew were then invited to an array of refreshments by the hostesses for the meeting who furnished a variety of delicious sandwiches, colorful wraps, and chips along with tasty cookies, green cake balls on sticks, and petit fours representing St. Patrick’s Day. The festive serving table held a lovely glass punch bowl full of green fruit punch adorned with bouquets of polka dot and green balloons, green napkins, and enough shamrock confetti to please any passing leprechauns! The fantastic hostesses included Millie Burnham, Sandy Kuykendall, Paula Barrier, Gail Bruner, Sandy Smith, and Kay Nettleship, hostess chairman. The next meeting of the Pierian Study Club will be April 12th in the home of Joycelyn McRorey. Hostesses for the meeting will be Jeri Jones, Louise Williams, Clione Rochat and Vickie Stephenson, Chair.
