The HOP offers public transportation in San Saba
Thursday, March 15, 2012 • Posted March 15, 2012

Did you know that San Saba and the surrounding area has public transportation service? Most of you are familiar with the teal green buses running around town, but may think they are for elderly and low income only. Although they are based at the San Saba Senior Center, these buses are used to transport both residents and visitors – of any age and income – to many different destinations. There are currently five buses stationed in San Saba and four drivers (one bus is used as a backup). Drivers serving the San Saba area are Idella Huron, Hopi Hernandez, Wayne Lindley, and Bill Hubbard. Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Trips are made to Lampasas every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.Very reasonable fares of $1.00 per trip (in town) are charged, and out-of-town fares are based on mileage. Fares are not charged for persons 60 years of age and over, but contributions are accepted to help defray operating costs. A portion of operating costs is covered by federal funds, but these funds are required to be matched by local resources and do not cover the full cost of providing transportation services.Criminal record checks are performed on all drivers, and all drivers are required to participate in a drug testing program. Drivers are trained in CPR, First Aid, Defensive Driving, and Passenger Assistance. To book a trip or for additional information, please call 1-800-791-9601. Medicaid clients who want to book a trip for a medical appointment should call 1-877-633-8747. Also, check us out on www.takethehop.com. We encourage you to use this service to shop local merchants, for medical appointments, for grocery shopping, for meals and activities at the Senior Center, and for all your transportation needs that are not of an emergency nature.
