FCCLA Sweeps Regional Competition
Thursday, March 8, 2012 • Posted March 8, 2012

The San Saba FCCLA competed at Regional Competition March 1 - 3 in Abilene, Texas. This year, Mrs. Rogers took 5 teams to competition. The kids have been working on their projects since September and were ready and excited to go.Despite months of work and preparation - you never know what to expect in the end. Judging of these events is always a guess - depending on who the judges are and what knowledge and experience they have within the event. All the hours students put in... coming in at 7:00 am and staying after school until 7:00pm definitely paid off this year. Students competed this year in Entrepreneurship, Illustrated Talk, National Programs in Action, Promote and Publicize, and Parliamentary Procedure. “We have competed in all the events in the past except for Parliamentary.” said Mrs. Rogers “Which is always concerning when you have never competed in something before. Not knowing if you have prepared enough.” To help prepare the parliamentary team, the students attended a workshop in October about parliamentary and then they had a professional parliamentarian (Mr. Overbey) from Austin come work with them before they went to competition. The Illustrated Talk group presented their information on “Inner Beauty” along with a skit they created. National Programs in Action, which is our Freshman team, created the recycled phone project. The Entrepreneurship team created a business plan for a pizza place in San Saba; and the Promote and Publicize team puts together a portfolio and slide show of all the things our local FCCLA group has done this year and how we are recruiting members. We also had one student this year take the LEO test (Leadership Enhancement Opportunity test), which is a test of a students knowledge of FCCLA. At the end of the competition we were pleased that all teams placed and will be moving on to State. State competition will be in Dallas on April 12 - 13. “We have a few things we need to tweak but I think they will all be ready for even greater achievements.” said Mrs. Rogers. “I couldn't be more proud of these kids. They are such a great group to work with.”
