Wow, what a GREAT event we had Monday night. The first annual Parent Academy proved to be as interesting and meaningful as we had hoped. I am so very proud of our students, teachers, principals, counselor, custodians, para professionals, cafeteria staff, central office staff, transportation and maintenance as they all stepped up to the challenge and played a key role in making this event truly a Parent focused informational time. Many great videos, presentations by students, overviews of curricular areas were presented. Many of these presentations will be available later this week on our website on the Parent Academy page. When asked to step up to a challenge, our students and staff really showed what they were made of and provided information that was relevant and interesting for the parents. Student volunteers from elementary grades to high school grades showed their leadership skills as they served as tour guides, sources of information, or provided child care so parents could focus on this event. Also joining the presenters was assessment, migrant and ESL representative, Mary Castanuela. Mary is from ESC XV in San Angelo and assists the District in a multitude of areas. Mary provided our ESL parents with vital information about how to help their children achieve while learning to master the English Language. Door prizes that were donated by our local merchants were drawn for on Wednesday, March 7 and those lucky winners were contacted by telephone. KNUZ was kind enough to let us draw for these prizes on the air as they supported this event and helped the ISD get the word out. We appreciate Skeebo Norris and his support and dedication to the students of SSISD. If you missed this event, please watch the website as the information will be posted soon. The main organizer of this event was Federal Programs Director, Michael Bohensky. Michael is responsible for parent involvement and ensuring we meet the guidelines put forward by the state and federal government. This event certainly exceeded any previous event in our efforts to increase parent involvement. Please thank Mr. Bohensky for his efforts when you see him! Spring Break is upon us! Parents we hope you and your children have a restful and enjoyable spring break and return to school rejuvenated for the final 9 weeks of school.
